The Badin Lake Sediment Remediation Project is tentatively scheduled to begin lowering the lake level in early November. The drawdown will be approximately 15 to 20 feet and will take place over a period of several weeks. Maximum drawdown will be maintained for approximately one week, but may extend into two weeks, after which the lake level will be raised to its normal operating range by mid to late December. Final plans and an exact schedule for the drawdown will be published after North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) has completed its public notice, comment, and approval process and all other required State and Federal regulatory approvals have been received.
The November/December time frame was chosen to help minimize possible effects on recreation and environmental resources. The drawdown will also provide a rare opportunity for residents to inspect private piers and other permitted facilities, and perform any necessary repairs or maintenance. Any repairs or maintenance to permitted facilities must be done in accordance with the Yadkin Project Shoreline Management Plan. For questions regarding Yadkin Project Shoreline Management Plan and permit requirements, contact Alcoa Power Generating Inc. at (888) 886-1063 or Karen Baldwin at (704) 422-5525, or visit our Yadkin website.
In areas where the lake bed is relatively smooth and rock-free, floating docks may be able to rest on the bottom with little or no problem. In these areas, the following advice is offered to owners:
- Remove the boat and any excess weight from floating sections to reduce structural stresses
- Disconnect hinges linking floating docks to ramps or stationary piers to allow the floating structure to adjust to the change in water level.
- Attach and anchor cables to allow floating sections to rest on the water as the lake level drops.
In areas where the shoreline is more rocky or uneven, owners may wish to temporarily remove the dock from the water.
