Jo Ann

Good morning all, Thanks for letting us know the polling results so far and thank you for sharing the pictures. It does seem both are getting fed, now. Looks like beautiful weather, too.

Joyce

Good Morning from California ! That wind drove me nuts this past weekend. But the nest held up ! Thanks for the updates on the votes and hoping Mavis' choices take the top vote. Love watching and have advised folks here in the MotherLode to tune in to our eagle family.
Go Lil Al & Big Sis Coa !
Joyce Pinecrest,CA

Catherine

Mr. John - Thanks for the up-date on the voting. Do we need to hit the vote buttons twice for the vote to count? Once I hit the bottom vote button the screen refreshes and another vote button appears. Is it necessary to hit the second vote button?

Nancy Bauer

We are excited not only to see your pair, but we have discovered we have a nesting pair of adults here on our farm in south-central VA! My question is, we have also spotted 2 immature ones flying in the area and today they were soaring with one of the adults...is this usual that the youngsters stay in the area? I remember you posted earlier on 3 youngsters near your nest and possibly could be last years babies? Thanks for any input!

Judith Hart

I wish someone would give us a clue as to how far behind Al and Coa are....Mr. John ???

MAVIS, It's all your fault, I told you to keep voting! Now we're behind, probably far behind...Al will really be upset...GET TO WORK!!!

Does anyone feel like doing the food count today? I'm out most of the day today....

R L ML

No fooling Happy 2 week birthday to the little one.
Thanks for the update and great pictures from the nest yesterday. They look good despite the wind on the nest then.

Cathy

Why does it appear that one is getting more food than the other? It is more assertive but shouldn't the parent try to feed them equally?

R L ML

Another feeding a bit before 1:00 EST.
Both parents feeding. As usual the older was getting the most, but the little one got quite a bit. Looks like they were having rabbit for lunch.

R L ML

NANCY No one knows where the youngsters go once they leave the nest. In places where they put trackers on them some really travel. One from Decorah went a long ways north after leaving the area and later was back in the area again.
Everyone here just wanted to believe that it was last year's babies.

R L ML

Little ones alone again for a while. Some day they are both going to be hiding under the branch to set everyone's alarm buttons off.
No pecking that I saw. A good P S for the older one to make room for the next feeding. Parent arrived back and settled on the nest with no feeding. Really digging down in the bowl.

nanapeg

I sure wish Dad would get to work and bring in more sticks to reinforce the left wall of the nest. Seems to be the main focal point of interest for exploration for the little ones. I don't think I'm going to do too well when we get to the "cardio" part of this experience.

Nancy

I seldom post or read comments but had to say I am so happy to read that Honor and Glory are in the lead. I know two Als in my personal life and while they are pleasant, laid-back, caring individuals, they are certainly no majestic-type eagles.

Coffeechugbooks

Whew! Finally getting caught up on all the backreading after being offline for the last few days. I think I have things caught up. Thank you Judith for your recap of food count every once in a while. Those posts were lifesavers for our project. If I read things right there has been nothing new brought into the nest the yesterday or today correct?

Gus Gocella

It is great to see the eaglets growing so fast. And the winds still are blowing but Mama keeps them safe from harm. What a wonderful site to visit and observe Nature at its finest. Thanks Alcoa Gus

RodJ

Anybody want to venture a guess as to what carcass is in the nest at about 12? I think it's recent.

R L ML

Came back on after my own feeding to see another feeding on the nest, one of the longest I have seen. I think it is Justice. From the time I came on the little one got the majority of the feeding although the other got plenty too. He had to pause the feeding a couple of times to tear off more of the fur and send it flying around the nest. Once the little one had 3 pieces on its back.
When the little one tried to get to the upper part of the nest he could hardly make it that crop was so full.

Roseanne

Love this site. Found it last year, and bookmarked it to see again this year. So awesome to watch the chicks grow

R L ML

RodJ No guess what the carcass is. Just checked pictures on NN and it wasn't there on a 2:00 picture, but is on a 3:10 one.

Jo

Awful windy out there...the littlest eaglet got blown over but got right back up! They may be little but they're strong! So much fun watching these little guys/gals grow and get stronger each day. Of course, eating like little piggies helps I guess LOL

Jo

ROFL little guy needs to learn NOT to poop into the wind!

Rich Swanson

Take a lesson......Don't poop into the wind.

Annette Kryske

1:18 PM PDT/Is that the little Bully that is getting fed?Did he knock the little guy down again? I missed the beginning of their feed. I can't seem to stay away from watching this.Looks like a gorilla in the background, but I really know better.(I think)Another cold & windy day, but this family can handle it/Thanks again to Alcoa, & Mr.John, and Bruce. for making this possible. Hope you all had a nice Easter.

RodJ

Looks like L/J just brought in a fish. 1&2 don't seem very hungry.

ColleenM

@rod, I have NO idea what the food was you are asking about. I chose to have "tunnel" vision when I see red! LOL! To me, it's all fish! But, I sure did see fur flying! The babies have a nice soft place to sleep now. The nest bowl is filled with it. I know this is a "NWZ" but the little one seems to have had it's share of bonks today...At one point, the little one had "food" all over it's head.

Annette Kryske

1:33 PM PDT. Justice just flew & left them alone. Am sure Liberty or Justice is watching from above. Not sure who came back, but the little ones greeted it , begging for more food. Looks like some spaghetti coming their way. Both getting fed. So cute to watch isn't it????Both parents are there now. Pulling food out from under the nest, & now cleaning things up a bit.Little guys are now dowwn for their afternoon siesta. I think I will join them, and take my siesta too. Nitey nite.

R L ML

L was feeding them when I tuned back in. Both little one wandered off and seemed to be in food comas before J came in and started helping L rearrange the food supply before L. flew off.

R L ML

Coleen, I thought what you called food on the little one's head was the fur that was being pulled off of the old rabbit. It was really flying around the nest.

Annette Kryske

CAROLYN: Hope all is well with you and your family. We haven't seen any Videos from you for quite a few days now. My family, and friends have been missing all the action about our little family here in Davenport. I spoiled them by forwarding all your videos. Hope you had a nice Easter!
Annette

Cherrycarol

This winter there were a lot of juvies in the area. I got a picture one day of 4 in the tree with Liberty eating a fish. So it could have been at least one of our last year babies. Carol The wind makes it feel like 0 out there today even tho it's 40. But the sun helps a lot.

Judith Hart

Ted H

3rd egg hatched @ Ft St Vrain Colorado. First 2 are so much bigger..... but so far so good. Little one was just fed after the older 2.

Cristine

Oh yikes! I've got the "blue bar" across my screen, and the video has stopped. Anybody else?

Shelly38

Yes I got the blue bar also and video has stopped

Judith Hart

Blue bar for me too.

Cristine

Thanks, Shelly. I'm glad to know it's not just my computer.

beamg

Blue bar here also. :(

sandi m

yep, I have the blue bar too...let's all be relieved it isn't a 'bar code' :-) seen what a nesting eagle would do to a hawk today as I skipped over to the Ft. place (sorry, memory isn't what it could be lately) very amazing. no surprise, just wow.

John Hazlett

I am no doubt in the minority in feeling uncomfortable with the idea of applying words that have worked so hard in the service of jingoism and war mongering to these birds. I'm not a huge Hemingway fan, but this thing he wrote resonates for me: “There were many words that you could not stand to hear and finally only the names of places had dignity. Certain numbers were the same way and certain dates and these with the names of the places were all you could say and have them mean anything. Abstract words such as glory, honor, courage, or hallow were obscene beside the concrete names of villages, the numbers of roads, the names of rivers, the numbers of regiments and the dates.”

Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms

Re: the Mystery Black Critter...I wondered if it was a rat? or a baby skunk? First thing I thought when I looked this a.m was OMG there is a grey bowling ball with a little head in the nest. Very cool day watching the feedings but the little guy is really getting beat down a lot...I hope this is normal. Mr. Hog even toddled over to one of the fish and tried to peck at it (he's learning!) and Little Guy just stayed down, I have not seen him eat any of the times I've looked. :/ Hope he's ok

Cherrycarol

He gets fed. They eat many times a day & I've seen him eat a lot at times.

illinieagle

Hi All! What does the blue bar mean? I am new to this, but I read your posts after trying to check on them and did not know what the "blue bar" we are all seeing means. Thank you for your help.

RodJ

The blue bar means there is a problem with the cable feed.

Judith Hart

Thanks Rodj....I thought it was the Pabst Blue Ribbon!

Mavis

Judith...Pabst Blue Ribbon? You do have your surprises for us! First the candy wrappers and now..Pabst! You need to be stuffing the ballot box for AL and Coa if they are to have a chance!! You can even keep one hand on the Pabst while you vote with the other hand.

I have a feed but it is different...red dot in center...and some wording with channel 2 at top. It is like a video of a video...but we do have picture!! We can't see much at night anyway. Just enough that they seem to be bedded down and the wind is mild..

Goodnight everyone!

sandy

all quiet on the nest. glad not to hear the wind howling. the little ones are growing so fast. I am interested to see what the names are going to be. glad there was no april fool jokes yesterday.

Dadfsr

Good Morning All! Quick peek at the nest shows all is calm and I'm not hearing a lot of wind. Read back through yesterday's comments-wasn't able to get on at all in the afternoon...darn work kept getting in the way!

I do see that apparently no one else saw the goose on the nest so all must be good ;)

And to the rest of the worry warts-NWZ!!!!!

Dadfsr

Liberty off the nest and Justice came in with a stick already...and the sun isn't even up!

Dadfsr

Liberty is back on the nest again after shaking the whole camera branch pretty good! I still think that is what a few people saw the other day that thought there was an earthquake...a #10 bird landing/taking off of the end of the camera branch has to have some kind of reactionary forces moving the limb while doing those maneuvers.

Catherine

Justice has left and now Liberty is back on the nest. It appeared to me that something alerted L to danger. She was sitting on the nest w/ her head tucked in. She quickly raised her head (like something had startled her) and began to call out. I could also hear J calling out. She left the nest and J came in for a few minutes and appeared to stand guard to the left of the nest bowl. I could hear heavy movement in the surrounding branches. Then L came back in and J left. L is now on the nest bowl with her head tucked in.

Dadfsr

Missed all that Catherine....grrr...was on the other side of the lab and screen went to refresh.

Sun is coming up now and everything is looking/sounding quiet again now.

Dadfsr

I think the unknown mammal just got solved! Liberty drug out a gray squirrel from the edge of the nest. Looks like it's on the menu for this morning

Dadfsr

Actually if she could fix some biscuits and gravy to go with it, it's not a bad breakfast :)

Dadfsr

Sure do like watching them feed though...I can just imagine L's mind talking "this piece is too big, open up, that's just right, no turn your beak the other way...etc." ;)

Catherine

I saw part of that feeding of the squirrel, but had to turn away when she started with the head. I can do fish heads, but mammal heads, not so much. Glad the feeding is over. Both parents on nest now.

Catherine

J just left. He was on the nest w/ L for a really long time.

Catherine

Looks like J just came back with a stick. L has left. J now on nest duty.

Catherine

Justice is feeding e1 the squirrel and e2 is laying low for now.

ColleenM

@ Catherine, me too! I'm with you on the squirrel feed, some thing's I can watch, some things, not so much! I know it's all perfectly normal, and it's how the eagles survive, but I still say "eeeuuu".

Cristine

Beautiful, calm morning at the nest. Blue skies, only a little breeze so far. Nice to be able to hear the trains and I think I hear a woodpecker. Good feeding for both of the babies at 8:00 A.M. from the (squirrel?) at the 1:00 position. Did not see any bonking going on when I was watching, and the little guy got in a good PS to boot!

Ted H

I really noticed on the feeding this morning that E1 will eat much larger pieces than E2, and has always eaten a lot more than E2, so they must be able to not only survive but thrive on much less than they are being fed. With the huge amount of food in the nest, they won't go hungry for sure. I haven't seen as much "fighting" for food as before, the agression seems to be less. That first week the agression of E1 was pretty high, to the point that some predicted E2 wouldn't survive. I was really concerned for E3 in Ft St Vrain nest, as when the 3rd egg hatched the first 2 were already over twice the size, and not nearly as much food in the nest as the Alcoa eagles. But this morning all 3 fed, although E1 there ate more than 2 & 3 combined. No agression though! Little E3 even was pecking at E1 and once took some food from E1's beak before it could be swallowed! E3 ate very little but seems plenty strong and active. So at this point I'm more concerned with E3 staying warm enough as getting enough to eat. At only 2 days old E3 is left uncovered a lot. But E3 looked as healthy and active as E1 & E2, but very cute at half the size of the siblings. Fun to watch ALL the eaglets!

Coffeechugbooks

A little blog post for students and anyone interested in the eagles http://coffeeforthebrain.blogspot.com/2013/04/liberty-and-justice-updates.html

Coffeechugbooks

I have added some new pages to our project page - http://eagleeyecamera.wikispaces.com/home

Over in the sidebar if you choose "see more" I have added Anatomy, Birds of Prey, Eagle Habitat, and Eagle Development.

I thought this might be a good idea. As we get some questions over and over I thought we could document these Q and A here so when people ask questions we can just refer them to these pages to find the info they need. I am open to other ideas. I thought that if we had one location of facts it might help with things a bit.

Mavis

10:34 AM EDT

Good morning everyone! Looks like some good warm sunshine on the nest and both babies are getting a good mid morning snack of seasoned, aged squirrel. They think it is yummy so who am I to judge? I have not every tried it. Don't plan to either.

Hopefully, this day will be a good one.

Catherine

Oh my! Two well-fed babies. So full, they can barely move. Two really good feedings this morning. One by J and one by L. L just left and Dad has taken over. He's getting his chance to feed and is munching on a fish.

R L ML

The 10:30 feeding went on for over 15 minutes. The little one was front and center for this one and got most of the early bites. Once when the older on reached over and got the bite the little one turned its head and grabbed it from him. The little one was in perfect bonking position but there was none of that.
Finally the oldest one just wandered off and lay down and the little one just turned its head and slept where it had been feeding.

Catherine

Coffeechugbooks - I'm very impressed with everything you've done. I really enjoyed all of the great photos. There were a couple of great shots of the nest from a distance. Really puts things in perspective. How lucky your students are to have someone who is so committed to providing the best educational experience.

E. R.

Good Morning everyone, Last checked E1 & E2 are being feed by Justice from I guess that squirrel, although to me it looked like a rag he drug out of the pile. Hey , Different strokes for different folks and believe me they can have everything in the nest. I had a short minute of concern when I saw a red something on E2. That was resolved when Justice reached over and plucked what ever it was off and swallowed it. My only salvation is that they eat 95% of what they hunt or fish. There is very little left over. Humans are the ones that waste everything, if you look at most wild life, they hunt and kill what they need to survive. There is a lesson there in that thought.HAHA Looks nice and sunny on the nest and the downstairs neighbors (little birds) are flying in and out of the twigs, there may be a nest down there. Liberty and Justice Keep a Eagle EYE on them too.

Annette Kryske

8:00 AM PDT. "Oh What a Beautiful Morning", from the play Oklahoma. and it truly is. Oops. , I guess there is a Fire Drill Alert going on in Davenport at this time. Sirens going off. Little ones are resting under Justice. I was glad to read some of your comments this AM about the little ones behavior during feeding. Barely hear the wind. It looks like all is calm in the nest. Have a Great Day You Eagleholics.

Tina

Yes, the "ew" actor concerning the nest is growing as I look here. When I think my aartment is messy, I just think of these eagles and think HEY at least I'm not at the point where I have dead things stashed under the couch. Yet. :) At 6 o'clock, almost off the screen, I can see two little feet dangling in the air, poking out of the nest....rabbit? I wish h wish she'd tidy up the nest, they are sitting, eating, playing and walking around on Parts. Hello to all! Thanks for the great posts

Lucille Bingham

11;40 am est and it's so nice to see the wee ones enjoying the beautiful sunshine. Apparently L & J are taking a much needed break!

Catherine

Is anyone else having problems with the comment section? All of the posts after #28 have disappeared from here. It looks like over 30 posts are missing.

Catherine

Don't know what happened, but now after posting, everything has returned.

Catherine

Justice just came in with another squirrel and Liberty quickly got up and took it from him. She has started feeding from it.

Catherine

Liberty left the nest and now Justice is pulling fur from the squirrel.

Catherine

The squirrel is laying between 12:00 and 2:00 position, tail at 12 and head at 2. The white patches on its back are from where Justice was removing fur.

Judith Hart

Catherine, I had that happen also when I tried to get to the last post, nothing came up...must be working now, I found you.

Catherine

I am not positive that this is a squirrel. Looked like it when he brought it in. The color appears black to me, so I guess it could also be a mink. Did anyone else see him bring it in?

Catherine

Thanks Judith - I thought it was something I had done that temporarily removed most of the posts. Whatever it was, it seems to be fixed now.

Did you see Justice bring the squirrel/mink in?

Judith Hart

Catherine, It could be a black squirrel.Could you see, did it have a bushy tail or a thinner one.

nanapeg

Sorry Catherine, if it isn't a "fish" I try not to look too closely! lol

ColleenM

@nan, tina and all that have the "euu" issues, if I see feet, I look away, if I see a tail as in fish, I'm fine! I've developed a keen "tunnel vision" while watching our little family!! Yesterday, the little one was covered in fur, it was actually comical! Mama was skinning "dinner" and I might say, she is pretty efficient at doing that. Hence the saying, "when the fur fly's"!!

Catherine

Judith - you can see the tail right behind J's tail feathers.

nanapeg

Yeah, what is it about fish? Doesn't bother me in the least...but the other stuff? Ugh! It is remarkable tho', how they introduce all different kinds of food sources to the little ones. Might have to look for something else for dinner if it's a poor fishing day. Can't afford to be too picky!

I was laughing too at the flying fur yesterday. At one point Mom had some fur on her beak and it just wouldn't go away. I think it finally blew away but it took awhile.

Judith Hart

Catherine, Looks like a squirrel tail, close enough, ya think? That's all so far today 1 squirrel?

Catherine

I only saw the squirrel brought in, but I was away for a couple of hours, so I could have missed anything else.

Catherine

Justice is now feeding the babies fresh squirrel. Big squirrel day today. Their morning feedings were of yesterdays squirrel.

Annette Kryske

12:48 PM PDT. The wind really kicked up since my last comment at 8:AM.Justice is feeding the little ones. What!, I don't know. I just love hearing the little tiny peeps coming from them every once in a while. I know it will be getting louder in a few weeks. This is the mid afternoon feeding. I see a tail in the background.Lib few in andd out again, just for a second.

Mavis

3:56 EDT

Feeding time again. They are both growing so fast and is getting harder to tell apart. Sure can't say little AL isn't getting his fill because he is. Looks like fresh red meat..squirrel I'm guessing. Lib flew in for a minute then took off again. (I'm guessing Lib). Both wee ones are so full they can hardly waddle and will coma dive any minute. The wind is sure blowing...and Justice (?) is trying to shield them from blowing away. I'm sure the little butterballs are too bottom heavy to blow far...but the wind does sound fierce.

nanapeg

Excuse me Dear...your tail feathers are in my face and I'm trying to feed the kids!!!!!!

Judith Hart

5:24 PM EDT Fish delivery...already ate the head...I think Justice brought it in. In another few minutes the whole fish will be gone.

ColleenM

First chance I've had today to watch a feeding today, WOW, the little one sure is getting big pieces! Both parents are feeding.

ColleenM

@nan, that was funny! Now, she is digging around in the nest bowl, as if to fluff it, while the older baby looks to be passed out next to her from a food coma!!

Judith Hart

The winds are going to drop to 5 mph after midnight. Right now...out of the NW 14 mph with gusts to 22 mph.

Todays food total 4-02
1:51 PM EDT 1 squirrel
5:24 PM EDT 1 fish

nanapeg

I hope they're right, Judith. I'd like to turn my speakers up again. (Miss those trains!)

Catherine

Judith - did you get the food count from yesterday? If not, I saw a small bird (maybe a gosling) and I think I remember someone reporting a squirrel. There were two squirrels being fed to the babies today. One for breakfast and lunch and then another one not too long ago.

Annette Kryske

NANAPEG: Are you having trouble with your sound on this site??Or do you just turn it down like I do because the wind & sound affects gets to us?I just lower the sound, just in case a train goes by or I can hear a peeping from the little ones. Are you a Nana. I am a Nannie too.Have 8 grandkids, & 3 geat grandkids. All scattered across the country.I feel these Eagles are our Grandkids too, don't you? Both L/J are in the windy nest at3:12 PDT.I liked the wind better this AM than now.It sue is shaking the nest also. Hold Tight Babies.

Judith Hart

Little Al looked cold, he tried snuggling up to Coa, then tried to crawl under dad, or mom, can't tell with the wind.
Catherine, I'll post the small bird and squirrel for yesterday, thanks.

Catherine

I think it's Justice. Hard to tell about the mark on the head with all this wind, but I don't see the mark on the white tail feathers, so I think it's J.

Judith Hart

I can't tell if Justice is plucking the rabbit or squirrel..The kids want to eat, It's like they're saying forget it, we want fish for dinner.

Catherine

Liberty brought something into the nest (I couldn't tell if was a fish or a small mammal - whatever it was she dropped it as soon as she came in and its hidden behind the Y branch. J still working on that rabbit or squirrel.
