10:11 AM PST. Good Morning Mr. John. Thanks for the good report. The cam was down when I checked in at 7 AM, but am happy all is well now. We are glad there is still some open water in the Mississippi for our Liberty and Justice, to get their nourishment. I will try to be back on station when the time comes for the laying of the eggs. How exciting can that be???We've been waiting patiently. "The cameras are ready for action"! Thanks again Mr. John, and Alcoa.

Debbie Weaver

Hi John,
I've been watching for a few years now and it's such an amazing journey. I LOVE the 2 cameras now too. I was wondering if there's any way that large branch can be removed under the close-up camera. Last year, I noticed certain views of the babies and some even of the parents, were getting blocked by it. Plus it was hard to see them being fed, at times. Just a thought. Thank you so much for all your efforts for all of us to see such a wonderful family of eagles.
Debbie

Ann

Can't wait for another family to begin.

Ann

Just read a comment from an observer requesting the possibility of removing the branch that runs in front of the nest camera. I hope that doesn't happen. I love it when the eagles hop up there and look straight at the camera. That limb is really part of their nest in a way.

John L.

The Alcoa branch must stay! It has become a Right of Passage. One Giant Leap for the eaglets as they begin to Branch!

Cherrycarol

Maybe it's not my place but I'm sure that limb will stay there. They love to sit on it. Mr John I did see one spot that was open in front of the nest Monday when I was there. And the lock & dam is very close for them to eat. It's so much fun to go there & watch the eagles. Carol

Mavis

I can't get over all the snow being gone...it is like 10º there now...and it has been below freezing all day. I guess, never having to deal with that kind of weather leaves me pretty dumb about those things. I'm just surprised.

I haven't seen the deer today but I have only been off and on today. I'm sure they are out looking for something good to chop down on..maybe they will find it with the snow cover gone. I bet this long protracted winter keeps the migrating eagles there a little longer than usual. If I was an eagle...I would think about staying there year round...the locks and dams makes eating daily a lot easier. Don't know how L and J would like all that competition for food though.

Ann, you are right...that limb is part of the nest...some things, man just needs to leave alone....so I'm not worried one bit about it. Alcoa already demonstrates their respect and care for the wildlife under their protection to go in and alter Liberty and Justice's home.

About time for L and J to show back up....maybe they will both pop in this afternoon.

Annette Kryske

2:00PM PST. Debbie,I don't think they can remove or lower that branch. It has been fixed there for years. Liberty and Justice like sitting on it, as it gets pretty crowded in the nest after the pips are born. We all got used the ups and downs of where they park themselves. You'll get used to it, I am sure. We will see a lot of action for a few months after the eggs are laid and then hatch. Annette

Chuck Howarth

@ Debbie: This is the branch you are talking about, and there is no way it can be removed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/WrongNo2/Alcoa%20Eagle%20Cam/ALCOABranch.jpg

John Riches

We would not remove the branch...and even if we wanted to we would not be going back up to the nest until August or September...long after the upcoming nesting season.

Mavis

6:11 PM EST

Liberty just landed in the nest...

Cherrycarol

She was there about 15 minutes. Trying out the nest & playing with that sick that's in the way.

beamg

Oh Darn, I missed Liberty in the nest!

I agree Mavis, amazing how little snow we see there now with the low temp all day. Maybe it blew away?

That branch....DNR absolutely would not allow anyone to go near that nest now! And who would do that in the frigid temps at the nest? Another year or two could very well see the nest built right up to that branch and it would become part of that nest. L & J, I think, picked that location in that tree because of that branch and how vital it is for the eaglets when they learn to branch and then fledge. jmho

Dinner time for me ad then watching the Hawkeye basketball game. Go Hawks!

beamg

YEA! Both in the nest!

Mavis

7:56 AM EST

WOW! Both in the nest, Bea? I missed that. Had to let my pups out. It is sooo cold and dreary here. Rained all night. Only 36º but seems so much colder. I see where traffic jams in AL and GA were stuck on the roads all night...school kids spent the night on their busses...students stuck at school all night (Atlanta). Was really bad out there for those on the highways. I bet Atlanta calls school out today!

The nest looks free of snow but you can tell it is still cold there.

Cristine...where are you?? Beginning to worry about you. Hope you are ok.

Cherrycarol

GM going to get to 21 today. WOOHOO!! & 33 tomorrow. Next week in the 20's aLL WEEK. That will feel good. Nobody home yet. Pretty quiet. Some of the ice should melt the next couple days & open up the river. So more eagles should come back.

beamg

WOW - anyone hearing that bird calling? No clue what it is but sounds happy. Must be because of that "heat wave" coming today! Gonna feel good, right Carol?

Mavis - yup both there last evening. I got a screen shot will post on OT in a minute. Had to leave right after that but I know they weren't there for long.

Oh my lots of bird calls! Sun's up! Looks and sounds awesome! :)

Still can't login with my FB ID. :(

beamg

Happy happy happy sounds at the nest? I'm loving it! Still nobody home.

beamg

well, replace my previous "?" with "!" duh

Mavis

Bea...just register to sign in with TypePad...easy and you can make your display name "beamg" . You can do like FB...add only the info you want to add...and you can upload your picture too.

I misread your post about seeing both of them...6:34...was thinking THIS morning...not last evening. Guess I was still half asleep.

I hear the little chirpers. They sound like they are next to the mic...love the sounds. You are right..they sound happy! My bird feeder is sure getting a good workout...so much pleasure watching them feed. I bet Alcoa has bird feeders too...I just bet they do. Remember the time a bad storm hit and the cam went down? Mr. John drove out to the nest in that weather just so he could tell us it was ok. That is what you call caring...something you don't get paid for....so I bet the hotel birds have feeders. Am waiting to see if any straw is found today. Liberty likes spending time in her nest bowl.

beamg

Mavis, believe me Ihave tried everything I can think of to get in with FB and get nowhere. It's probably my computer! ug! I'll try again later. For now I'm happy I can post but don't like those words I can't read well.

Cherrycarol

Liberty flew in Squaking all the way. Probably chasing off another eagle

Darlene Nichols

Good morning everyone.......even cold temps are easier to tolerate when the sun is shining......have a wonderful sunny day ! If it continues to shine we should see some snow melt on the grounds and maybe Liberty can find some nesting materials

Darlene Nichols

I should have qualified that to MORE snow melted........you're right, tho, Mavis.....a few piles of straw would be extraordinarily lucky for her to find

Bea Griffore

Finally.....login tiwh fb id worked for me! I had to shut down, do some fix-it things again, take a longer break away from this headache inducing laptop and things are back to normal. Or as normal as they get.

So, I missed L squawking and flying in but will keep watching now. So nice the sun is still shining! Darlene the sun must be for you!

Nobody home....

Bea Griffore

Ok, y'all can enjoy my word scramble and try to figure out what I'm talking about. I'm tired of correcting my stupid typos!

Cristine

I hate to tell you Mavis, but I am in Maui right now! I brought my laptop and have checked in a few times on the nest, and try to catch up with the comments. My connection is not very good all of the time, and this four hour time change is really throwing me off :) It's been cool and rainy here the last couple of days, but I am NOT complaining as I know what the weather back home in the Midwest has been this week. It is absolutely beautiful here, and we have experienced some amazing things.( A road-trip to the top of the volcano and a helicopter ride over the island.) The "Farmer" and I celebrated our 40 wedding anniversary on 26th., and we will be back home to the farm this Sunday.
So comforting to hear all is well at the nest. I was a little disturbed about the cutting off of the "Alcoa Branch", but that sounds like it's all under control :)
Looking forward to getting things back to normal next week, warmer temps and the increasing activity at the nest with Liberty and Justice preparing for their new little family.
Take care everyone. TTYL

Bea Griffore

Oh Cristine, I'm so happy for you! Happy Anniversary and enjoy Maui! You are in such a beautiful place. My husband and I rode bikes 26 miles down Haleakela on those switch back curves - whew, what a thrill. I'm so relieved to know you are not only ok but in a warm place. Mavis will be relieved too.

Mavis

Maui??? OMG! I was worried you may have fallen bringing in firewood or something! Maui? Super wonderful! Oh my...such an exciting way to celebrate your 40th anniversary with The Farmer. I love it. Girl, you are full of surprises!

Just checked on the nest...nothing going on. I bet they are at one of the lock and dams hanging out and watching their northern visitors.

Darlene, was happy to see you check in, too. I know you got the blunt of the storm a day or two after Alcoa. I guess you can tell by the reports coming out of Atlanta and Birmingham, that the South just can't handle what you all go through with winter storms. Guess this is a sure sign of global warming...but it leaves me scratching my head! Of course, our summers are pretty darn hot. Anyway, glad you are ok, Darlene...and happy to hear Cristine is doing the hula!!

Cherrycarol

Liberty eating dinner. 4"15 pm

Cherrycarol

Christine Happy Anniversary & enjoy Maui! I'm going to Kawai in a few weeks. I hope no rain. Carol

Judith Hart

Both L and J bringing sticks into the nest and working away.

Judith Hart

A youngster tried to land in the nest with L and J still in it, veered off at the last minute with L and J screeching at it.

Judith Hart

Quite a few Juvies flying through the woods around the camera, screeching going on....some flying over the river.

Mavis

Liberty enjoyed sitting in the nest bowl then left around 5:45...a few minutes later, an intruder entered the nest and Liberty flew back in and chased her away. Justice then joined Liberty where, as Judy noted, they worked a bit on the nest when the juvie tried to enter the nest. Justice flew to the Alcoa branch for a few minutes before rejoining Liberty briefly then flew away, leaving just Liberty. She also left after a few more minutes. A lot of activity...I got a few pictures...but the focus was just too bad for a clear capture.

Mavis

6:32 PM EST

Did I just see Liberty chase another adult from the nest? Wow! The intruders are really wanting to take the nest...Liberty may have to stay close by to protect her home...she is still there...bbl

Judith Hart

Lots of action tonight...Liberty lands in the nest with a fish...Juvies want some, they're flying around...Justice lands in the nest, Liberty takes off with the fish.....what next???

Judith Hart

Liberty I think....just moved that slingshot looking stick out of the way. Justice flew in and Liberty flew out.....I sure didn't see that spot on her tail.

Carolyn

Good evening all, I have recorded a lot of good footage this afternoon and evening, but the timing of the last departure was such later than I had hoped, and I have a committee meeting to attend this evening. I will be unable to edit and upload the resulting videos until tomorrow. I will do so as early as I possibly can! The action on the nest was really exciting this afternoon, I felt like I needed a scorecard to keep track of which was which eagle!LOL With all the nest work today, it is beginning to look as if nesting season is quickly approaching! I can hardly wait!

Bea Griffore

Good morning everyone.

Boy oh boy did I miss a lot of action yesterday! I wish I had seen that slingshot stick get moved. It was bothering me because it looked so dangerous. Guess I should have reminded myself of the NWZ! Maybe Carolyn has that in her video....?

Carol - Kawaii!!! I love that Island and wish I could go back. It's my favorite! You know it has one of the rainiest spots on earth getting an average of around 450" of rain a year. BUT, that's at the canyon. One thing about all of Hawaii is that it might rain every day but only lasts about 10 min, the sun comes out and the rest of the day is great.

It's early yet and nothing going on at the nest. bbl

Judith Hart

L or J sitting in the nest 8:00 AM ET

Cherrycarol

Liberty has been laying in the nest for a long time this morning . 1/2 that I no of. It.s 7:15 am now. Hmmm!!

Mavis

8:57 AM EST Jan 30th

I watched L sitting in her nest bowl for a long time this morning, too. Sure hate to see her sit in that hard bowl bottom without nice, fresh, clean, dry straw to make it more cozy for her and the eggs. I don't know how to say that any plainer, Mr. John. (he's going to bonk me for sure!)

The weather report you posted, Judy, means winter weather is not going away quietly. IA has bad weather all year, it seems....flooding...hot summers...hurricane force winds...tornadoes...blizzards...mayflies...what am I leaving out? The nest seems to gracefully weather it all...and Liberty/Justice appears to love their home that is nestled next to the Mississippi River.

There was a LOT of action at the nest late afternoon yesterday, l can't wait to see Carolyn's video for a replay.

Good morning everyone..

Bea Griffore

Seems I'm always in the wrong place at the wrong time! Too busy on FB and missed everything this morning too.

I see the nest bobbing around again and Mavis you're right - it weathers it all! Shows how well the nest is made! Aren't L & J the best builders? Some man made structures don't survive as much. In between all those things you listed about Iowa are some really awesome days with perfect temps, corn and soybean crops that seem to grow overnight, and some of the nicest, most caring people you could ever hope to meet - down to earth people. I do have to say I've met people like that all over the US so that's not just Iowa/Illinois people.

Judith, that weather report is, well, just crappy! I can't wait until you get to post better ones!

Guess I have to get busy - so much to do and so little time. I'm really getting excited about getting closer to egg laying time!

Darlene Nichols

Doggone...........nothing ever happens in the afternoon which is the time I'm most able to tune in......as you suggested, Mavis, a broken bale of straw or even just a few piles (do they call those layers "sleeves") that might happen to fall off the grounds crews truck would be just perfect.......maybe with this new round of snow You said was coming in, Judith, we might see that happen. Judith.....do you think you could give us like Phoenix, Ar.'s forecast one of these days so we can all dream of better times ahead........I'm so tired of snow!.........GOOD MORNING, everyone.......have a good day (or as you really accomplished computer users would say....HAGD

Judith Hart

Good Morning Darlene....it's almost time for lunch.
I wonder if Liberty and Justice will be able to do any nestorations before Saturday, looks like high winds and snow today and snow through Saturday. I sure can't remember if they put their bedding for the nest bowl on top of snow or not.

Judith Hart

Liberty sitting in the nest at 1:57 PM ET

Bea Griffore

YEA! I see her too Judith! Is she trying to melt the snow in the nest with her body heat?

Darlene, are you watching?

I also see snow coming down - light snow that looks sideways at times.

Judith Hart

Looks like she's thinking about all the work they have to do before she drops an egg. The bowl looks hard as a rock and there's hardly any branches on the left side of the nest. More work for them, and it's just beginning.

Mavis

I watched Liberty sit in the nest bowl, too. Looks like she is checking it all out and getting ready.

Judy...WHAT bedding? Someone is not getting the hint! I'm thinking an egg by next Wednesday or Thursday. Just my hunch...maybe before.

Cristine, if you are watching...you might want to stay a few more days...winter ain't over, girl!

Judith Hart

I see deer on the right side, one just poked it's head out from behind a tree.

Judith Hart

Four deer now right side....

R L ML

The deer stuck around for a long time as I saw a couple there after 3 est.

Darlene Nichols

Well I'm back and they're all gone......just going to have to look at the deer in my backyard !..........but what I really want to see is L and J......from everybodys posts yesterday looks like 5pm is the next best time......I'll check back then. Ahem, Mr. John........haven't noticed any straw dropped on the groumd and the weather people around here are talking big snow for next Wednesday(in Cincinnati) and our weather comes from the northwest in winter....sooooo, you think?..um.......straw?

Darlene Nichols

I'm not going to say another word about straw......but you know what I wonder?....who are the people who go around taking pictures of people's house numbers? If I saw someone doing that at my house I'd call the police !!

Cherrycarol

At least that storm didn't last too long. Just enough to make it messy again.

Judith Hart

There's a bunch of Starlings rummaging about the nest. I hear Eagles in the background.

Bea Griffore

6:45pm CT Both L & J in the nest. I didn't see them come in but they were sort of beaking and moving sticks and then left. Great way to end the day......

R L ML

Both L an J were on for a short time at around 5:45 nest time

Bea Griffore

Thanks R L ML, I got so excited I forgot my time zone! You are right it was 5:45pm CT.

Mavis

I missed the last nest visit...that would have been 5:50 nest time. They are coming in later than they have been. I noticed that yesterday.

The wind has picked back up...blowing pretty hard right now.

Hope everyone enjoys a good evening...

Sam BarcusI )

Anyone know what the bright lights are behind the nest tonight?

John L.

Sam,there is an out building within a few yards of the nesting tree. The camera angle makes it appear much closer.

PattiO

Last year we had eggs on the 7th and the 10th. I wouldn't mind if they waited a little longer with this awful winter we're having!

Mavis

8:55 AM EST Jan 31st

Been checking the nest this morning and I haven't seen any activity yet. The wind is calmer than it was last night. Guess L and J are dining out for breakfast.

PattiO, I am with you on waiting a while for the egg laying. This weather and the competition from the visiting eagles doesn't make this the best of conditions. I look for it to be soon, though. Liberty is spending so much time in the nest bowl that I feel she is getting everything ready. She is also more aggressive at defending her nest. It is just a guessing game and only L and J know the answer!

Super Bowl weekend...good stay in weather too. Good morning everyone!

Judith Hart

I just checked Davenports weather....looks like 6 more inches of snow for you. Three inches tonight and three tomorrow. Sorry!
Then it's headed for me....Great! Thanks!

Judith Hart

My nephew just called me, all excited, "I think I just saw two Bald Eagles".....he lives on Biscayne Bay in Miami. He was out on his balcony, saw two huge birds, black bodies white head and tail. They were chasing sea gulls, they knocked one out of the sky into the water, the other Eagle swooped down to the water, grabbed it and they both flew off.
I guess there could be a nest in one of the TV towers in the area.

Mavis

Judy, how exciting! There were nesting bald eagles in Steinhatchee but I never saw the nests. I know the fishing is great but I don't know how they take that heat in S FL. He really saw some action!!

I keep checking on our nest...either I missed it or nothing is going on yet. Even the intruders are staying away. I heard eagles a little earlier but never saw them.

R L ML

It is so quiet at the nest this noon that I can hear the music background. It helps that I have my hearing aids in.

Marty Becker

Does the closeup cam look a bit soft/out-of-focus as compared to previous years or other eagle cams such as Berry College?

Judith Hart

Marty, To my eyes it does look out of focus.
Just saw an Eagle fly over the river and head toward the nest, flew over the nest and out of sight.

Judith Hart

Snowing again...looks like flying mothballs.

Cherrycarol

Sam B if u mean the lights in IL> that is John Deere's factory in East Moline. More snow. Ugg!!

Judith Hart

It just looked like a Juvie and Starling landed in the nest at the same time.

Mavis

Judy, I saw that! That little starling didn't seem a bit afraid of the juvie! I saw a couple of starlings on the limbs by the nest as well.

R L ML

Both L and J were on the nest at around 5:45 nest time. It was almost too dark to see them from the long view.

Cherrycarol

another snowy day.:( Streets aren't hardly plowed. But I got to work ok. All bur 3 have cancelled for today. I;m sick of this weather & I'm sure L & J are too!!

Judith Hart

L or J just brought in some straw to line the nest, so sad with the nest full of snow. I wonder where she found that with the ground covered with snow. Interesting!

Tim

Is there a way to get the nest view into focus a little bit better? Thanks.

Judith Hart

Liberty crunching on a fish in the nest, sounds like it's frozen.

Judith Hart

Liberty kicking some of the snow out of the nest bowl, she sat for a while then took off. You can hear them both near the nest. Maybe she's out getting more hay.
I think she's getting ready to start sitting.

Mavis

S T R A W !!! I just got home and saw clean, fresh, dry, straw!! Miracles do happen. With all that snow, I wonder how she found it. She probably flew over to a farmers barn and got some. These are pretty smart birds! Of course, I have my own hunches...

Looks like the snow is here to stay for awhile. The weather is crazy all over the U.S. Like I said...a good weekend to stay in...at least for me, it is. Rainy and dreary but my temps aren't bad...just wet.

Cherrycarol

When I first looked at the nest it looked like a cat sitting in it. LOL! Straw. Yes I wonder where they could have found that too!4 pm & still some snow coming down. At least the roads r better.

Judith Hart

There's a kid playing in the nest. It looks like the one in the pictures Mr. John took, with the white chest with L and J.

Cherrycarol

5:30 pm Liberty in the nest. Then Justice flew in with a stick. He was trying to re arrange things & Liberty didn't like it. Of course. One flew off & the other moved the sticks around. One kept rolling back at him & he finally moved it. Lots more stick on top of the snow.

R L ML

One of them was on the Alcoa branch two times and they were joined by a juvie for a couple minutes. One was on the branch and the other in the nest when the nest one did some screeching and the juvie settled on the edge of the nest and was not bothered by either.
The 1st one arrived on the nest at 5:25 and the last one left from the branch at 5:50 nest time.

Mavis

R L, I am so glad you saw and reported about the juvie. Liberty has been so protective of the nest the past couple of days that I am surprised the juvie was allowed to stay anywhere near the nest. If it was the same one that has visited L and J regularly on the nest the past few weeks, then I can't help but believe the juvie is one of theirs. Makes me feel good to think that.

All joking aside...was good to see the straw on the nest today. If Liberty should happen to lay her eggs in this awful weather, the insulation and cushion the straw will provide will be important.

Mavis

Judy...I just noticed that you reported seeing the juvie at the same time R L saw him/her. Sorry...I did not see your post until after I posted the above. Good! Two of you saw the juvie....maybe we will see him/her again tomorrow. Don't know why that excites me...there is a reason the juvies cannot stick around after the eggs are laid. I think I have become fond of him/her...thinking he/she is one of our little darlings.

beamg

Morning everyone. Been offline a couple days. This does not look like a nest that is ready for eggs! Looking more and more like my prediction of Feb 14 is going to be closer to right than I really thought! But only L & J know for sure so it will be fun to see what happens. I'm just hoping for a successful season for a new family to watch and stress over.
HAGDA!

Cherrycarol

GM everyone. Fed my birds & they are singing like it's spring. & they r here too. Maybe because it's not windy & no snow. But COLD & sun.HAGD

beamg

8:51am CT both L & J in the nest moivng sticks. Then one jumped up to the famous Alcoa branch! A minute later the one in the nest flew off, followed seconds later by the one on the branch. So good to see them after missing the nest for days.

bbl?

Judith Hart

Liberty was sitting on the Alcoa branch, just left....some flying going on around the nest...

Judith Hart

She's back with a stick....she just sat and kicked more snow out of the bowl...off she goes again for more sticks...today might be fix the house up day.

Alex Smith

What's up with the "Mariachi" music?

Judith Hart

Alex, I believe we were told that there's a Spanish radio station close by, somehow their sound leaks through to this cam :(

Mavis

Judy...do they plan the same song over and over?? I can't tell one song from the other. Would be nice if they broadcast the Super Bowl tonight! Anything beats that same song playing over and over...at least that is what it sounds like.

Got to make a dip for tonight...

Sorry about the sad news at the SWF nest last night...that will bother me all day.

Cherrycarol

Went to lock & dam 14.WOW!! How awesome it is to watch all those eagles. They were every where even in trees up & down the highway. Got a few pic I'll share. On OT

Cherrycarol

GM -20 this morning. I'm sure L & J r in a warmer spot. + 20 by this afternoon. At least it's not windy, YET!

Mavis

Carol, I saw your pictures...all those eagles in the trees and flying...must have been such a thrill to see it in person !!

I got up late and checked the nest. Nothing there except that little bit of straw. Doesn't look like it has been moved much. I may have missed the action...I'll keep checking.

Feb 3rd and still winter in IA. Temp was nice last night in NJ for Super Bowl and I see snow in NYC outside the TV studio...it changed fast. I think you are in another winter storm. Nothing surprises me anymore with this weather. Good morning everyone..
