Cherrycarol

Love the photos. Looks like the ones I take at lock & dam 14. I saw a few flying around the tree this morning. Thanks Mr. John & Alcoa.

Mavis

3:24 PM EST

Have not seen L or J at the nest this morning. Must be enjoying one of the last free days along the Mississippi before the big event. I still hear many eagles in the nest tree area and see a few flying along the river. Yesterday was a busy day at the nest, and this may be their day of rest and relaxation.

Carol is right..nice pictures. A lot of juvies in the area. I wonder how many plan to stay after the big thaw.

R L ML

No one reports any activity on the nest this morning after all of the activity the last 2 days. Thanks for letting us know that there are eagles around even if we can't see them. Good shots as usual.

Judith Hart

In the last few pictures Mr. John has posted, I've noticed the juvie with the white chest. In this thread it's the bottom picture with the adults. I'm thinking white chest is Glory, she appears larger in the pix.....then the other juvie must be Honor!

Shucks, I almost put down Honorable Al!

Cristine

Liberty on the nest. It looks so beautiful with the sun shining on it at sunset. It doesn't sound like I missed any "action" today while I was gone.

Judith.. are we allowed to say that? :)

Annette... I read your last post on the other thread in awe and amazement. You are really 86 years old? That is fabulous! I do hope that one of the eggs is laid on one of your birthdays. That is an amazing story :)

Cristine

5:50 CT.......and she is gone.

John L.

Did anyone see what just happened in the nest? An adult was on the nest. something was flying around. The adult attacked out of camera range. Sounds of a shuffle ensued for a brief moment. 7:09 EST. Too dark now to see anything.

Mavis

Cristine, she sat there a while, didn't she. I don't know why she was so active...with almost an anxiety about her yesterday, and stayed away all day today. I figured she was enjoying one of her last days off before the new season begins for her. She did look beautiful and regal in her nest. Am looking forward to what tomorrow holds.

Judy, you have always had a good eye for detail when it comes to these eagles.

I do not remember if it has been mentioned here or not....sometimes I have a hard time keeping the comments on here and the ones on OT separate...but...D1, the juvie of 2011 Decorah nest is back at here natal nest. The tracking shows that she has been returning to her birth nest around Christmas time of every year. They also say she has traveled about 7.500 miles in her 3 years since fledging. I think that is a good story.

John L.

Mr John. Do you have a video loop of the nest around the 7:05 to 7:10 PM Monday night? There was a scuffle at the nest.

Cristine

John L.... I missed that. Right before Liberty left the nest, she acted like she heard and saw something, but I wasn't aware of anything happening out of camera range. Of course I didn't have my sound turned all of the way up, either. Interesting. Anyone else?

Mavis... thnx for sharing the info about the Decorah juvie. That is truly amazing, and definite proof that juvies do return to their birth nest, something we have thought all along.

Mavis

John L...I sure hope you get a reply. I didn't see it..

R L ML

There was a loud screeching just before Liberty left at 5:50 nest time. After that I went on to do some thing else and missed the scuffle John describes.

Darlene Nichols

Fantastic pictures, Mr. John.........thank you for taking the time to get them. Because of you and Carol and Rebecca (and forgive me for whoever I missed) those of us who aren't there can get a real sense of Liberty and Justice's "home" territory

beamg

Good morning fellow eagleholics!

I thought I missed a lot yesterday but after catching up on my reading I guess not much happened at the nest. Maybe today L & J will be at the nest more. I do hear lots of eagle calls already but don't see them yet.

Mr. John thanks for the pics. I love that you got one of the deer!

Hoping for some nesting material to be brought in today and just maybe an egg will appear on Valentine's Day. :)

Cherrycarol

Gm We set t record last night -21 the old one was -15 in 1887. I hope this is IT!! Suppose to warm up the rest of the week. So the snow in the nest should melt.

Bea Griffore

Oh Carol, that record setting is not good news. :( I, too, hope this is it - enough is enough already!

I love all the bird sounds in the morning and this one sounds so good! The birds sound happy so I'm taking that as a good sign for better things to come. Melt that darn snow in the nest and let's get going with the egg laying. Patience is a virtue but I know we're all getting anxious. bbl

Bea Griffore

Amazing! The bird calls are echoing!!! I'm not good at recognizing all the calls but this is a thrill to hear. If only the "music" would go away.......siiiighhh. Nothing against the music except when it interferes with my nature listening pleasure.

Mavis

9:19 AM EST Feb 11

Bea, I have been listening to all the songs of Spring with snow everywhere! I even saw a few flurries earlier. It is amazing that the little birds even have enough feathers to stay warm in what CC said was -21º last night. Boggles my mind...but there they are...chirping away and jumping around like they are enjoying their morning.

Cherry Carol, I hope you are right...maybe this is the last bad cold blast and things can begin to warm up some. Would certainly be nice if the waterways to the North thaw out so the visitors can start their own nest preparations. Time for things to settle down to normal.

I've been watching since about 6:30 this morning. I saw several eagles flying in the background and a couple landed on the TTV limb...but no eagles entered the nest yet. Guess it is just a waiting game for everyone.

Good morning everyone

Cristine

Those birds really ARE active this morning! Even though it's so cold, the slight wind we have is from the South, and I think the combination of the strong sunshine and the Southerly wind really gets them going! The temp is supposed to jump up to a fabulous 11 degrees today. That's a 30 degree jump, so that's pretty good! Tomorrow, a chance of light snow, but at least it's supposed to be warmer!
Took my mom to the Dr. yesterday in Moline. On the way home, we saw a lone Bald Eagle perched in the very "tippy-top" of a very tall old, bald pine tree along the Rock River. It took me by surprise, and really made my day.
Good morning everyone!

Bea Griffore

Cristine and Mavis, I'm so glad you are also hearing the symphony this morning. I heard a woodpecker earlier too amongst the other sounds. I've seen some of the flybys too.

Last year I was driving home from Dav and saw an eagle in a tree top at a farm. No camera along and I couldn't have stopped anyway to get a pic but can still see it in my mind. Like you Cristine, it made my day! I think I smiled all the way home.

I really need to get some stuff done but now I'm hearing eagles again somewhere so I might not be able to walk away. Does it look like the icey snow in the nest has melted just a bit? Maybe I'm just imagining but it does look dirtier down in the ice bowl. Ok, off to do some chores, maybe one at a time and then back for a peek to see what's going on.

Cristine

Hahaha Bea! You do chores the way I do :)

John L.

Has anyone seen any adults this morning? I reported a scuffle last night at dusk but don't mean to alarm folks. I put a request out to Mr John but have not seen a reply. There's a detailed comment on OT.

John L.

A song bird is singing right by the microphone!

John L.

Finally. L & J on nest at 11:55 am.

Bea Griffore

YEA! One chore done just in time! Hello there beautiful L & J!

Mavis

John L...have not had a good look at Liberty yet...she is sitting on the nest...Justice on the Alcoa branch standing watch. Glad to see them both on the nest....

Bea Griffore

John L., it's a relief after what you heard/saw yesterday, isn't it!

And there's the train too. Ok, all's on track.

Cristine, the only way to do chores especailly now with waiting and not wanting to miss a thing! Not sure you were watching maybe a couple years ago about the "supplies" we needed to have handy at our computer desks so we wouldn't miss anything but it ranged from coffee makers to......ok, never mind the details. You can use your imagination :)

John L.

Mavis, I've been watching since 9:00am. I could eagles in the area, but saw nothing ...Till just now. And they're gone again.

Bea Griffore

And Back again!

Mavis

Both back and one brought in a big stick at 12:16.

John L...I've been watching since 6:30...11:52 was first visit to nest that I am aware of. I still hear other eagles in the area.

John L.

Yeah, Liberty came back with a big stick and boinked Justice on the back when she landed. Still can't find grass. They need it SOON!!!

John L.

Is this the Real Thing or just a final Dress Rehearsal? I'm pretty excited right now! I should be prepping for an upcoming Nor'easter but can't leave the computer.

Sam Barcus

Everyone seems excited! I checked around 6 AM with no activity, then I went to the Berry College nest, and that poor eagle was covered with ice. I felt so bad for her, and to think her eggs should hatch soon. This crazy weather!

Cristine

I was able to see L & J in the nest a little bit ago. They just looked so excited, and ready to go to work! Made me smile when both of them had a hold of opposite ends of that big stick, and tried to move it :) I'll bet they will be able to find some soft nesting material as soon as soon as this never-ending-snow melts of the ground. Oh, and I saw that noisy red-headed woodpecker in the nest this morning, just for a minute.

Mavis

Well...it was exciting there for a while. I'm like John L., wondering if today is a practice run. Don't think there will be many more of them...the real thinkg should be happening soon. Today is not over. They may be on a fish break! I know the cold weather is to get worse this week. Gosh...you all need a THAW!!

Cristine

Looks like Liberty on the nest, doing a lot of "talking" with the juvie who is on the branch above the nest-view camera.

Cristine

Now she's eating something in the nest. It's not looking like a fish :)

Cristine

A small dark-colored mammal of some kind? Hard to tell.... Still talking up a storm with the juvie while she's eating.

Cherrycarol

Yea Christine it is hard to tell what she's eating. But it sure is tough. Squirrel black maybe.

Judith Hart

Liberty just went after another juvie, she took off from the nest, circled it but didn't touch it....she's now back in the nest.....juvie just did another fly by.

Cherrycarol

It's not giving up. If it's a squirrel they can use the fur in the nest.

Judith Hart

She's really annoyed today....don't think I'd want to be anywhere near her. The little Starlings better watch out.

I thought I spotted a fish tail on her meal before, now I see feathers or fur flying. Is that the same meal?

Cristine

Yep. Same meal. Definitely fur. Black squirrel is a great guess, Carol!

Cristine

Deer!!!!

Judith Hart

Yep, I think I see the tail, frozen stiff.

Bea Griffore

Isn't that unusual? She flew off and left food there. I think black squirrel too. That golden glow makes it look warmer than it is but it's so pretty! Tomorrow is suppose to be in the 30s I think. Hmmm, thawing in that case and maybe some dry grass will be available. Oh I hope so!

Cristine

Seems like a long, long, time ago since we've seen a squirrel in the nest.

Bea Griffore

You're right Cristine!

Judith, are you snowed in yet?

Judith Hart

Bea, No snow yet, I think it starts tomorrow, calling for 11+ inches for my area. Took off for the store early, every time there's a storm coming, I seem to add more and more to the fridge and freezers.

Oh No, juvie above the nest, please no fights tonight, I know the kids going for the squirrel.

Cristine

Juvie back in that spot above the nest-view cam. All is quiet for the moment.

Cristine

This one looks different than the one earlier don't you think? This one looks older, with an almost white head.
Good grief, Judith. 11 inches?????

Cherrycarol

Sub adult on a branch up from the nest. Looks close to 5 years old. About Freedoms age.

Judith Hart

Juvie took off. I can't believe it didn't go for the squirrel. Wonder if L & J are near?

Cristine

6:05 CT Almost dark and Liberty or Justice is back in the nest working on that squirrel!

Cristine

Late dinner is finally over and he/she is gone.

Jo

A little bit of nestorizing going on right now by Liberty but she didn't stay long.

John L.

This may have been asked before, but, will Alcoa turn off the lights on the building turning the nesting season?

Mavis

John L, I don't know about the lights. Actually, I don't remember them there last year. I am so glad that we have night vision on the nest camera. It sure makes it nice when we want to check in on them at night.

Michael, England

Q. Anyone know what last year's hatched fledged pair became? Tagged?
Or are you lot just cross-state broody-drooling about the awaited 2014 new eagle eggs?
Aw shucks and Gee. Niceday.

John L.

Mavis, the lights were off last year. With the night vision, those building lights actually make the viewing less enjoyable.

Cherrycarol

GM Going to start warming up the next 2 weeks. Finally!! Michael they don't tag these eagles. Both fledges just fine. Carol

beamg

GM Carol and everyone. Such good news about the warm up!

I see the remnants of the squirrel are still there. Just getting here so I haven't seen much going on yet. But the birds all sound happy again even without sunshine.

Mavis and John, I think the cam is angled a bit differently this year and someone may have already posted that. Those could be security lights that have to stay on at that building down below? I don't think it will bother L & J. They picked this location and I remember in the past seeing at least one light visible at night. jmo

Michael - you're watching from England? That's awesome!

bbj

I remember the lights from last year. They just aren't as visible when the tree is leafed-out.
Love the audio and visual of this cam.

Judith Hart

bbj, You're right, when the tree leafs out, you see a nice halo effect around the nest.

I haven't seen anyone at the nest yet this morning.

Checked the Berry College nest, the female sitting on the eggs during storm...sleet and freezing rain, she's soaked.
http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/

Mavis

Been watching the nest since about 7 am....saw a lot of flybys and heard/hear a lot of chatter. It's like a morning choir of birds happy to start a new day...brrrr! They have more spunk than me. I get slightly chilled and I slow down..big time!!

Bea, I am amazed that the squirrel is still there too. With so many juvies and other adults around willing to steal food when they can...I am surprised the squirrel is not long gone!

bbj, good observation about the lights and leaf coverage. I didn't think about that...but...there were no leaves last Feb when eggs were in the nest and I don't remember the lights. Not saying they weren't on...just don't remember seeing them. Bea, I think you are right...the camera is aimed at a slightly different angle and may be the reason we can see the lights now. Personally, I'm ok either way...just glad I can see the nest at night. It's the music that gets next to me at times...but not willing to cut my precious sound down to eliminate it!! If L and J can survive this winter and lack of straw...I can survive the music. I may try to learn Spanish so I can understand the words.

Carol...love that forecast of warming up!

I am looking for action around the nest today....good morning everyone

Judith Hart

Liberty and Justice in the nest......she's making that cooing sound.

Judith Hart

It looks like they stuck the squirrel into the nest bowl. It's a start! They're desperate to line it with something.

Cristine

Morning all!
Just got on to see both Liberty and Justice in the nest, still messing with the remnants of that black squirrel from yesterday. Liberty seemed a bit testy, and I saw her peck at poor Justice quite a few times. I can't believe how late she stayed in the nest working on that thing. It was 6:30 CT and in the dark. that squirrell must be quite tasty and a welcome variation from their fish diet!
A high of 23 today, with a chance of light snow More snow predicted for the weekend :(

Cristine

11:55 CT Just watched Justice fly into the nest.( At least I THINK it's Justice, because I don't see a spot on his tail.) I think he had a fish that he is now eating. A big juvie landed on the side of the nest and a little skirmish ensued. The juvie flew off. and now Justice is gone, too.

Joanne

I have watched the eagle cam in previous years without any problems. This year, however, I only get the turning "circle of doom" when trying to bring up the bottom cam (the close up nest cam). Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix that? Thanks in advance.

Cristine

Up close and personal. Justice on the Alcoa branch, while Liberty flies in, re-arranges some sticks and then lays down. Think she is getting in the nesting spirit :) Looks like things may be thawing out in the nest a little today.

Judith Hart

L & J both at the nest, 1 sitting, 1 on the Alcoa branch.

Coffeechugbooks

Finally, I see Liberty and Justice together! I am trying to load up images of the nest from days past to our wiki http://eagleeyeproject2.wikispaces.com/Eagle+Nest+Pictures

Some have sent me some images. Will backread here and in other forums to fill in previous days of images people have captured.

Students are so excited to see an egg!

Judith Hart

Does anyone see a black spot on the eagles head in the nest?

Cristine

Looks like bird-poop, Judith :)

Judith Hart

Right you are, just saw the close up Cristine...she got nailed with a PS. Looks like a Gull! The ones that hit you at the beach.

R L ML

Liberty flew in 1st a little after 1:00 nest time. I knew it was her because when Justice came in a little later I saw the black tail spot on the one already in the nest. At first I thought it was Liberty that flew up on the Alcoa branch, but from the later activities, it must have been Justice. There were other eagles around as they did a lot of screeching and also could hear some distant screeching. Did see one fly by. Liberty did leave the nest for a few minutes after Justice was on the branch. Judith I also noticed the black spot on the head of the one on the nest, but couldn't make out what it was.

Cristine

Well, now it will be very quick and easy to tell them apart :)

Cristine

Justice back in the nest with a little fish. Ate the whole thing, saved the tail for last.

Judith Hart

Well, it's been snowing in North West NC since 1:00....We already have 3-4 inches...the guesstimate for my area is now up to 18".....FUN! The birds are having a feeding festival at the feeders, in the snow.

Cherrycarol

Joanne When I get that I just start all over & it works. I went to the river across from the nest tree. Saw a dozen sitting on the edge of the ice a couple in a tree to the right of the nest. A juvie flew right over my head! Awesome!! Carol

Bea Griffore

Joanne, what Carol said works for me too. Click pause and then click the start arrow again.

Wow, Judith! Up to 18 inches! I'm glad you went to the store and stocked up.

I see a bird in the nest picking around at stuff. Maybe there are remnants or the squirrel or fish in there? Sure can't be bugs! Missed the squirrel getting eaten - did they bury the tail in the nest? Sure don't see it.

Good to read that L & J were both at the nest today since I missed them. I'm hoping they might still show up for while today.

Carol, you have the best time when you go look at the eagles! Lots of people are pretty jealous of you.

Jo

Little bitty bird pecking around in the nest now but other than that I've seen no action for a while now. Where'd L & J go?!

Cowgirlsue114

Just joining the forum. Been watching the SW Florida Eagle cam with Ozzie and Harriot and 49 days old little E4-he lost his sibling to unknown cause 10 days ago. So sad. Looking forward to the nesting season here.

Jo

Oh and I've had lots of problems with the tree top view going offline today. Anyone else having problems with that, too?

Jo

Howdy and welcome Cowgirlsue! You'll enjoy Liberty and Justice...they're great parents!

Jo

♫ I hear that train acoming, coming round the bend♪

Mary Richter

I'm just starting to tune in this year. Can anyone please help with this: WHAT is the music / radio playing all the time? Any way to stop that so we can just listen to the birds?

I'm really enjoying reading all of your blogs. You are quite the eagle fans / experts! Thanks.

Jo

LOL hey, whatsa matta wit youse guys? No one wantsa sing wif me? ;) :D

Jo

I hear it too Mary and I don't know how to tune it out either. Anyone else know what to do about it?

Jo

Sorry about that y'all, just trying to determine if my posts are actually making it in here ;)

Bea Griffore

Mary Richter and Jo, last year Mr. John said the music is somehow bleeding through to the cam sound. I don't know of a solution. We just have to deal with it I guess. I haven't been on much today but haven't really had problems with the TTV cam today.

Cowgirlsue, I've watched the SW FL nest too and that was sad. Especially when E3 was doing the best of the 2. Hard to watch that happen. That's nature but that doesn't make it any easier. I haven't checked there in a few days so thanks for reminding me - I need to go check on E4.

I'm beginnig the think L & J might not be back tonight. Sure was cloudy day today.

Bea Griffore

And just like that L shows up! Talk earlier said she has that poop mark on her and it sure is visible. Lights just coming on too.

Judith Hart

Liberty sitting in the nest.....ID..spot on head.

Bea Griffore

Judith - It's nice to be able to tell easier that it's her but that looks kind of nasty on her white feathers. I wonder how she got that, and where she's been hanging out. Calling out loudly now! She want's you Justice!

Cherrycarol

Her head sure looks awful. I want to wash it off.

Judith Hart

Snow now coming down at the Berry College nest....she sitting, her mate to the right.
http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/

Bea Griffore

Oh my, something must have just landed on the TTV cam or limb it's on. Cam shook a lot!

Me too Carol! She could use a shampoo!

Judith Hart

Liberty in the nest.
