Cherrycarol

Thanks for the new pictures. Love the one of all the straw. No wonder they have so much in the nest! Awesome!! Loving the nice spring weather too. Thanks Mr. John & Alcoa. Carol

Cristine

Beautiful pics, Mr. John. Thank you! It is wonderful to be able to see what the eagles are seeing :) Think we just had a change-over at the nest and almost totally missed it. I came in just as he/she was settling on the eggs. Is it Justice?

Cristine

Whoever it is has a feather stuck on his/her nose! (Beak)

Cristine

Didn't see the dark spot on the tail on his last turn around the eggs, so still thinking it's Justice.

gregory

JO- ill try to figure that out but im not sure I understand.

Cristine

Beautiful, beautiful color now at the nest!

Cristine

7:00 on the nose! Liberty flies in to take over "night-duty".

gregory

JO --
I remember once when I needed an accent grave à. that was tricky. I am still trying to figure your last post.

HEY-- what are the bowling stats this year.
ANYONE?

Bea Griffore

Good morning.
7:30am EDT - L still sleeping with head tucked in.

Love the new pics Mr. John - especailly the straw! So happy that was put out for L & J just when they needed it so much.

Bea Griffore

It's 8:15am and the sunrise is awesome at the nest this morning! The "jewels" are back around the nest and the birds are singing away happily. I can't decide if I like the sunrises or the sunsets more - both are just so beautiful!

KWQC weather notice tells me a high of 49 is expected today with snow developing later. ug - snow? One good thing is that it probably will not last long this time of year.

Mavis

8:47 AM EDT Mar 15th

Bea..you are right....the woods are just full of nature sounds! Love it. I even hear a woodpecker somewhere in the mix. The best way to enjoy a cup of coffee and start the day.

Cristine, which QC are you in? Sometimes you get snow that the nest doesn't get and vice versa so I was wondering how far you are from the nest.

Carol...thinking about you today...

Judy is probably still in bed...takes her 4 or 5 months to adjust to the time change. She is missing these glorious bird calls.

Good morning everyone

Kat

Can still hear the music but volume is low. The students in my 2nd grade class are really learning a lot this year--making daily observations of both the Alcoa Eagles and Ospreys. If you haven't checked out Oliveea and Oscar the Osprey yet==you should!!! The comparisons and differences between the two are fascinating. Way to go Alcoa!!

Bea Griffore

Kat - you know we love it when we hear kids are tuning in and learning! 2nd graders have minds like sponges soaking it all up and wanting more. I hope they get to see the hatches - that is so amazing to witness and nobody wants to leave the cam for anything else. And you probably already know that. Yes, the osprey are awesome too!

Judith, if it takes you 4 to 5 months to adjust to the time change it will be time already for another time change!

Where did the sun go?

Oma K

Gregory,
If you google 'ways to make symbols' and follow that by naming your computer brand, you should discover more than you ever wanted to know re: symbols. For example, here the link I use for my MacBook Air: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Symbols-on-a-Mac

I'm enjoying the fact that spring is FINALLY arriving in the QC, but as I live in NE IL we still have another week or so of snow cover. Currently around 4" remaining…. Got to love that lake effect snow; NOT!

Kat

Thanks Bea!!! Yes, they are like little sponges! I call the cameras the REAL "reality" shows!! Honestly--the first thing they ask for --if the camera isn't already up on our Smartboard--is to turn on the nests!! At the end of the year, we will have a 'Bird of Prey Extravaganza' where we will build mini nests, write reports and invite parents to the event. We built a life size eagle nest last year--over 7 feet long filled with sticks and grass and fake food. We even drew and painted a life sized eagle for the nest! Amazing things can happen in public schools!

Cristine

Morning! Just checking in before I leave for my grand-daughter's basketball game this morning. Nice and calm out there this morning, isn't it? Even here at the farm! We are kind of on a high ridge here, so we normally get a lot of the same wind that the nest gets, there on the river. We actually don't live in the Q.C. per se, Mavis, but two miles out from a very small farming community. It is about 30-40 miles S.E. of the nest, on the Illinois side of the river. We are so small, we don't even have a grocery store, and I end up buying a lot of my supplies in the Quad Cities. I stock up a lot when things are on sale, and in the winter I use a lot of the vegetables from my garden than I have frozen.

The geese are noisy this morning! I am also hearing a Blue-Jay. Love that beautiful picture of that goose, Mr. John! It almost looks like blossoms on those branches, but I know they are just dead leaves. Gorgeous color.

Gotta run.

Mavis

Just had a changing of the nest....not sure but I think it is Justice on duty right now. Not much else happening.

Cristine...that sounds like my kind of town. I love the sound of your community. So small that I bet all of the residents can smell your apple pies when you bake! You told us the name once...but I couldn't remember...not that I would know where it was, anyway.

Oma, I noticed Decorah still has ground covered snow, too. Maybe it won't last long. At least it is not all melting at the same time. Maybe the Mississippi will stay in the banks this year.

Our weather is perfect right now...cool nights and mornings...warm afternoons. It won't last long...soon it will be hot 24/7....but for now, it is nice.

R L ML

Thanks for the new pictures. The one of L or J soaring overhead and some comments and pictures on O T reminded me of all the times I now see pictures and stories of eagles that I probably never would have noticed before I started watching the Alcoa eagle cam nearly 2 years ago.

R L ML

Forgot to say that I liked your title for this latest update.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

I don't think Mississippi River will stay in the banks this year, too much snow in the tributaries that feed into it. I live a mile from the Bonnet Carre' Spillway in Louisiana, http://www.pbase.com/septembermorn and click on Bonnet Carre' Spillway and you will see where all the water eventually lands up. I do believe the Spillway will have to be opened this year because of all the snow and rain in the northern states. Our eagles along the Mississippi are enjoying soaring right now because their babies are almost fledging and they have less responsibility. This always makes me sad because I know soon they will migrate and I won't see them until September. But, I have Alcoa eagles to warm my heart.

Jo

Hi Gregory, one of my posts never showed up at all! I guess I took too long to type it out and it didn't post it for some reason.

What I tried to tell you about making a coffee mug was this: put an "s or a c" which will be the handle for the cup, and then hold down the alt key while pressing numbers 178 on the numbers lock keypad, then let go of the alt key and you'll get this-> ▓ together they make s▓ or c▓ for a mug of coffee ;). All I can tell you to do to get different signs is to play around with the alt and number lock key pad. I used to have a link to where all the different things you can make with the alt number lock combination but I can't find it...must have lost it somewhere. Here are a couple more places where you can get combinations of things to make emoticons: http://ustream-helpers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=16 andhttp://www.wikihow.com/Type-Symbols-Using-the-ALT-Key

Jo

Mr John, thanks for the great pictures! It's nice to see where all that nice golden straw came from that looks so soft for Liberty's nest!

Wind seems to have calmed down a lot since yesterday. Everything looks calm right now. All I saw was Liberty on the nest...no one and nothing else in view. Hope it stays that way and the only one that comes in view is Justice.

What happened @ Larry and Lucy's nest, from what I've been told, is an intruder came in and Lucy and Larry both chased it off. Although Lucy came back for a short time, she disappeared and another female (the little hussy) came back and nested with Larry. I could be wrong but that's what I was told happened.

Mavis

Jo, you can read about Lucy and Larry and the new nesting season at eagles4kids.com

It has been a nice, lazy day at the nest...I like that.

Oma K

Canada Geese flyover… No visual, but those birds were LOUD!

Bea Griffore

Every time I've checked today it's been so peaceful looking. A little breeze is blowing the nest but not bad.

Oma K I've heard the geese flyover too and always expect to see them but seldom do. There they go now but they are not in sight.

Cristine, let us know how your granddaughter's game turns out.

Coleen P L, I'm sure too there will be flooding. Man just can not contain that river even if they think they can and the melting from the north has to go somewhere. Let's just pray it isn't too severe.

Cristine

6:18 nest time: Liberty sitting on the eggs with her wings spread just a little bit, exposing that elusive spot on her tail! She then flies off leaving the eggs exposed for a minute. I believe it is now Justice who just flew in and is on the eggs now. Liberty must have flown off to get a quick dinner :)

Cristine

Colleen... Oh my goodness! I was totally blown away by the the incredible photographs and stories on your site! I think I could spend hours just reading and learning. Thank you so much for sharing.

The beautiful light of the setting sun now on the nest. It seems like the one on the nest always likes to face that direction at sunset.

Judith Hart

Coleen, Thank you for sharing your photographs with us.

Cristine

7:10 nest time: Liberty is back...almost landing on poor Justice's head as she flew into the nest. Settling in for the night.

SARA

I enjoyed watching Liberty & Justice at there nest, seeing their 2 eggs.
Love reading all your post! Everyone makes it so interesting too.
Who does buy the fresh straw & puts it near the nest?
Thank, S

Bea Griffore

Good morning everyone.

Snow on the nest again. :( The wind is blowing like crazy again too. Good grief! Nest is bouncing around too. Makes me think "Hang on Liberty!"

SARA - one of our viewers had a bale of straw delivered to Alcoa back when the first egg was laid and there didn't seem to be any nesting material available for Liberty and Justice. Alcoa then put out piles of straw and almost immediately it started showing up in the nest! Isn't that an awesome act of kindness? It just melts my heart.

Mavis - If you're watching, I'm going to look at the Sandhill crane cam to see if I can see lift off this morning. It's time!

Bea Griffore

If you want to watch the sandhill cranes this AM, once again here is the link:

gregory

JO thanks- this is fun

Mavis

Bea!! THanks...if you had not reminded me....I would have missed that thrilling experience! That was such a great way to start the morning! Actually seeing it is nothing like looking at the pictures. I felt like I was flying with them. Oh my...that was some kind of fun. Thank you for the wake up !!

Mavis

9:20 AM EDT Mar 16th

The nest looks cold. Snow covers the ground and nest...the wind is blowing and it is 22º without the wind chill. It will be windy and cold tonight...around 16º. Should warm up and melt the snow tomorrow with a high in low 40s. Right now, L is trying to find enough loose straw to tuck around her to block the wind drafts. The little "Rambos" (starlings) are out and a lot of nature chatter all around. I have not seen the deer this morning, but I may have missed them.

My grass is really growning...the azaleas are in bloom...and Spring has hit my little town. It is fast approaching the QC area, too. It won't be long before the cottonwood starts budding out and we will be fussing because the leaves will block part of our long range view...and the mayflies will crawl on the camera lens! We do enjoy this nest, don't we?!

Good morning!

Cherrycarol

Good morning. Yes some more snow but at least it won't last long. Watching while I do 3 weeks of book work. uGGG! I'm exhausted! Just need to catch up on everything today! & rest!!

Bea Griffore

Hi Mavis - so glad you got to see the Sandhills this morning! Isn't it an awesome sight? Hard to put into words what it's like to see it! I think it's a great way to pass some time while we wait for the eggs to hatch here at Alcoa.

I does look like the sun is trying to shine at our nest. J needs to come in with some more straw!

Ahhh, spring - it can't get here soon enough. I heard on the news last night about the Rock River flooding in the QCA and saw pics of huge chunks of ice. They look like icebergs! A week before spring arrives and there is flooding already.

Time to get ready for my day. bbl

Cristine

Oh no!!!!!! Is one of the eggs broken?????????? got on just in time to see Liberty turn the eggs. Justice flies in. Liberty gets up again and one of the eggs is stuck to her. It appears broken!!! Justice get on the nest. I am shaking so hard I can't type this.

Cristine

Help!!!! Did anybody else see this? I am so distraught!

Cristine

Liberty was making this sad mewing noise when she changed places with Justice. I am in tears.

Cristine

9:53 Nest time. Justice gets up to turn the eggs. He only turns one. Don't see the other one at all :(

Cristine

My heart is breaking.

Cristine

10:10 Justice turning the only remaining egg. So very, very, sad.........

Bea Griffore

Cristine, I'm so sorry I haven't been on for over an hour. I have not yet seen what you saw. Just wanted to let you know I'm here for right now....and watching.

Bea Griffore

I just saw that someone tweeted the same suspicion.

Cristine

Bea..... so glad you are on. It was a terrible, terrible sight to see that broken egg :((((

Bea Griffore

Cristine, I still haven't seen it. Just got back from a phone call. I'm so sorry you had to see it......:(

Bea Griffore

I posted and asked on OT but nobody there has said they have seen it either.

Bea Griffore

I'm trying to tell J to get up. He's not moving off.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

I did see a large crack in one of the eggs a few moments ago when they were turned. So sad.

Bea Griffore

Very jerky camera feed right now but I saw that one egg definitely looks very cracked when Justice just got up and did an egg roll. No chance for a screen shot.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

And, whoever is on the nest just went into protective mode when one of the sparrow got too near the eggs.

Bea Griffore

Yes, very sad.

John L.

That didn't look good at all! Egg was somewhat misshaped and what seemed to be a large crack in it. Sad day at the nest!

Cristine

..........New Thread........

Bonnie

Is the picture down or is it just me.
