Yippy! I love contests and I have my comment in.

Bea Griffore

Who is on the nest? I don't see the wonky feather that we saw on Justice yesterday and I don't see a black tail spot that Liberty is famous for. OH it's Liberty! She just got up to feed the eaglet! YEA finally with my own eyes in the daylight! Awwww, so sweet!

Judith Hart

Liberty feeding little one rabbit for brunch. Healthy meal, I think they eat better than I do!
Cristine, I think we are the only ones in the world that can't try to win the chocolate egg. They sure look yummy!

Coleen Perilloux Landry

Just saw a feeding for the first time, such a precious little eaglet and I think it is a girl. Last night I named her Mariah for the song "They call the wind Mariah" when I saw the nest bouncing around in that ferocious wind.
The little one seems to eat very well and Liberty is so patient. What a glorious day!
Happy Birthday to our beautiful new addition to the family of Liberty and Justice. Welcome to our world.

Kimberly

I am SOOOO EXCITED! Just logged in (between work conference calls) and got to see a mid morning feeding! Not sure which parent fed our little one- but he/she was enjoying every bite. I love how gentle the parent is while feeding and tearing the bites into tiny pieces...Made my day! Thanks Alcoa for this wonderful experience!

Judith Hart

I think Justice is sitting now, no tail spot, but the wild feather has fallen out.
I have a hard time telling them apart this year.

Judith Hart

Liberty was just perched on the Alcoa branch, she just took off.

Judith Hart

Another feeding, rabbit, by L&J. Liberty now sitting, tail spots.

Bea Griffore

Sounds like our eaglet is eating very well! Pampered little thing, isn't it?

Judith, even chocolate isn't incentive enough to join FB? You are pretty strong willed! Still haven't heard from Cristine, have we?

I'm having a hard time telling who is who too. Name tags! Now, who is going to hand them out to L & J? Looks like things are drying out at the nest. The ever present Iowa wind is still blowing. You would think it's still March! bbl

Judith Hart

Bea, Didn't Liberty have only 1 tail spot on the upper left tail? Now I thought I saw 2, one on the right side just opposite the other.

Bea Griffore

Judith, that's what I've been thinking too. The last few times I've seen her tail I've seen exactly what you saw. I guess we're going to have to start going by the eye and beak differences we've learned about. With Justice now losing that wild feather it's harder to tell with him too!

Bea Griffore

I just got a News Headlines notice from KWQC and the severe weather last night was one of the stories. You can check it out here:

http://www.kwqc.com/story/25154437/severe-weather-slideshow-hail-4214

Hope everyone in the viewing area is safe and that we start hearing from some of those viewers soon.

Jan

Absolutely precious the way they feeding their eaglet! Thank you Alcoa for making this viewing possible!

Bea Griffore

Looks like a lot more grass has been been brought in! Actual grass, not straw. The nest is looking more and more comfortable for our little eaglet. And the food in the panty is covered too. Missed that last feeding. Maybe I'll see the next one.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

I hope everyone is safe with the severe weather all over the U. S. We are having high winds and severe storms heading into Louisiana. Just got a new roof put on yesterday from the small tornado in February; hope there are no more.
With "my" eagles in Louisiana, I can always tell the difference because the female's white tail is longer than the male;s, same as with Liberty and Justice.
I do wish I could see Justice bringing in grasses and see both on the nest together. This is such a wonderful time in the breeding season of the eagles. Thank you, Alcoa.

Judith Hart

Coleen, Thanks for the tail tip, I'll see if it helps me. Quick, before they switch, who do you think is sitting now? They're calling to each other , so they might change soon.

Cherrycarol

I guess I slept thru most of the storms until 5 o'clock. They were talking about it on the radio how long the thunder lasted. No wonder Liberty was so sleepy this morning. Probably got none last night. Sierens going off at 2 am people said too.I didn't hear those either. Got my customers watching & they are loving it!!

Cherrycarol

The way I can tell them apart is there heads Justice is a sleeker (unless it's real windy) Where Liberty is poofier. Seen them fighting over who is going to feed the wee one. It's squeeeking now. Too cute. Maybe it's time too eat Liberty.

Jillian

There so cute liberty and justice

Coleen Perilloux Landry

I am not liking the cry of this bird right now.

Roger

Thanks to Alcoa and I too signed up for the contest.

Judith Hart

Suddenly that wind is horrible again. It sounds like she's crying for Justice to bring food quickly.

Judith Hart

ATTACK ON THE NEST!!!!

Ann Bennett

I noticed the mother crying and heard a train whistle in the background. Does the train whistle disturb the eagles?

Mavis

Mr. John...zoom out...Judy is right..please

Cherrycarol

OMG!! Was another eagle attacking Liberty! I think it's over now. I hope so! Holly cow!! No the train doesn't bother them. I'm sure u saw what it was tho.

Judith Hart

The eagle that attacked the nest had multiple spots on the tail, it looked a little like that wicked female that was hanging around just before the eggs were laid.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

An eagle brought in straw but Liberty attacked it. This screaming and crying is really bad.

Judith Hart

Another attack, that eagle is trying to drop straw in out nest.

CVgal

From what I saw, an adult eagle landed on the edge of nest, and parent on nest mantled her eaglets, and kinda shoved the intruder off. Intruder only landed for about 2 seconds. It did not appear to attack at all, but did get way too close...

Coleen Perilloux Landry

Seems a bit calmer now, she is not crying so desperately.

Cathy Covemaker

Is the baby okay? She is really distressed.

Mike

Just saw her get attacked twice,, she is really stressed out

gmarose6

I saw that, looked like eagle dropped off some grass and parent acted like it was an intruder. Parent sure is moving around the nest alot. Hope things get settled down. We had rain, wind, lightning and thunder last night. Some areas also had hail upto Golf ball sized hail down to pea sized hail. More rain tonight but don't think anything like last night.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

where is Justice?

Judith Hart

More problems for our eagle family! Where could Justice be? Why is another eagle dropping straw in our nest? Trying to take it over? Very strange!

Amber Gavin

I thought that Justice was in the nest. I must have blinked and they switched out earlier. I saw the attack twice and I was just panicked. I thought it was Liberty trying to come back first but then with one swoop of the wing that bird was gone. Gosh these Eagles need name tags!! I hope the attack is over for good now. That screaming is heart wrenching. We saw the nesting material too--is that bird trying to trick Liberty into thinking its her mate by bringing straw?

Judith Hart

That other eagle must be making passes by the nest, out of camera range, for her to be crying like that.
This is going to be one stressful night!
Wish Justice would show up.

Camryn

You can tell L & J apart by the Colorado of their feathers. Liberty's are blackish and Justice's are more of a chocolaty Colorado.

Camryn

Not Colorado. It auto-corrected when I typed colour.

Mavis

I saw both intrusions. When any eagle invades the space of another eagle's nest...especially when there are eggs or hatchlings...it is usually not good. Eagles are territorial and an intruder is not welcomed. It might be compared to someone breaking down the front door to your home and entering. L was calling 911 with her voice...and readied herself to defend her home. Don't know the intent of the other eagle. Bringing straw puzzles me too. If the intruder had been a little younger...I would have said maybe...just maybe this was Freedom...but this eagle is older than Freedom. I do know I became really concerned for the safety of the baby during the last scuffle as there was a little too much foot movement close to the wee one. Whatever reason the intruder invaded the nest...I hope it moves on. L and J has been through enough this season. I'm just giving you my opinion of what I saw. I'm still a little shaken as another adult entering a sitting nest just doesn't happen..or not that I have seen.

I love the new TTV for now. But gosh, I wanted the other view back during the intrusion so I could see more of what was going on. I still have not seen Justice.....(assuming it is L that is on the nest...it is getting hard to tell).

Camryn

It is indeed Liberty and she just went to sleep. Hope nothing comes during her nap.

Cherrycarol

I think it's L too. Looks like she's out for the night. It will be better than last night. And no more eagles either Please. Justice where r you??

Bea Griffore

Oh Lordy, what a terrible time at the nest! I missed it all but reading about it is bad enough to make me shake. I'm so glad it's calm now, except for the wind that is. Nobody has seen Justice? Oh dear me.

Glynn

Wouldn't only Justice bring straw to the nest. She was so upset by whatever was intruding earlier, maybe it was Justice she attacked and didn't realize it. Hope he comes back. When was the last time he was at the nest if that was not him with the straw?

Camryn

Oh dear. I get the feeling something happened to Justice.

gmarose6

J and L were both on the nest at 3:50pm looking around on alert. Saw a picture someone posted. Are we allowed to post links on here? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=829729440387214&set=gm.572207806220714&type=1&theater

Mavis

gmarose6....I cannot access that link but I have a picture with the time stamp of 4:53 PM EDT posted on OT as the last time I saw L and J together. I am concerned that J has not been back....unless I missed him.

Camryn

I think the imposter might have either harmed Justice so he can't return to the nest or -heaven forbid- killed him. Pray for Justice tonight.

Mike

If i recall last year he was gone for long periods of time,.,. Lets have faith people ..

Mavis

Glynn, I didn't mean to post so quick. I meant to tell you that I posted a picture of the intruder's tail with 4 black spots on it...so it was not Justice. I will also tell you that I knew L's calling was not her normal call and was alarmed before anything happened. When the other eagle entered the nest, I too thought it was Justice and when L went on the offense...I wondered what was going on. I knew she felt threatened and that could not be Justice when I saw the picture of the tail...

Camryn

Pray for Justice everyone. I hope he's alright.

Camryn

Omg people that's J on the nest. No need to worry anymore.

Glynn

Where I can't see him just Liberty sleeping.

Bea Griffore

Camryn, are you saying there was a switch? I haven't seen one but I did miss a few minutes. Or are you saying it's been Justice on the nest all along? I guess I'm confused.

Judith Hart

Camryn, chill out, we have pictures of the one tail spot, it's Liberty on the nest.

Bea Griffore

Thanks Judith.

Camryn

Guys Justice was on the nest all along. I was panicking for no reason.

Mavis

I don't know anymore than any of you...but I have three thoughts.

1. They may not expose the little one to a feeding if they think a threat may still be around.

2. Justice is close by but out of view...and he is on watch, protecting his family.

3. Liberty would not be sleeping if Justice wasn't close by...

I hope I am right...but I don't know either. Just my thinking...

Mavis

Camryn...are you seeing something the rest of us are missing? Where do you see Justice? I'm excited...I should be able to see what you see. Hope you are not looking at the spread out wing of L ...

Bea Griffore

Mavis, that's good thinking. I agree with all 3 but especially #3 - Liberty would not be sleeping if Justice wasn't close by.

Oh, her head just came up. But all looks ok.

Bea Griffore

We all need to remember NWZ! No Worry Zone. All is well until we know different.

Mavis

That wind is horrid. Maybe Coleen was right...they call the wind Mariah!
It just never seems to let up.

I saw her look up, Bea...then tuck her head in her back feathers. She feels safe to do that....or I think she does.

Has anyone heard from Cristine? Not like her not to post...

Bea Griffore

Cristine's last post was just after midnight on April 2.

Camryn

It is Justice. I can tell because the longest wing feathers cross over the tail on him.

Judith Hart

I just checked the weather, unfortunately more wind for tomorrow. Good news for Saturday, a high of 53 and SUNNY.

Bea Griffore

I just read there are wind warnings for Iowa tomorrow. Goodness, we just need things to be calm!

Judith Hart

Just to confirm our earlier postings.....Several of us have stayed up waiting for LIBERTY to move, we knew we were right from an earlier picture....just wanted to confirm it, we have the picture just taken, spot on tail, it's Liberty on the nest. Good Night everyone...

Mavis

11:44 PM EDT

I just posted my picture of the spot,, with the time stamp of 11:30 PM EDT, on OT...

Goodnight all.

Cristine

I'm here. Just got home. It's been a rough two days. My dad passed away yesterday morning, just two hours before the eaglet hatched. Mavis, Bea, and Judith, I so much appreciate you all being worried about me. You just know I would have been here to join in all of the joy and excitement of the hatch. I so wanted to be a part of it. Trying to catch up with the posts. Oh my, there are a lot of them! Very frightening what went on at the nest tonight.
Yes, Judith... you and I will be the only ones in the world who can't win a chocolate egg :) It seemed like it thundered all night long last night, but I was so out-of-it tired I didn't even head to the basement with the cats.
Family coming in the next few days for the funeral on Sunday, and burial on Monday. I hope to check in when I can. It's very comforting to have my eagle family here. Thank you.

Mavis

Oh, Cristine...there are no words...just know we feel for you and your family. It is a very painful time to get through and family does help. The deeper the pain...well that means the deeper the love. I know you are hurting. A friend would of mine would say to you..."May the whisper of the angel's wing wrap you in a peaceful sleep tonight." I wish that for you. I am truly sorry.

Cheryl

Cristine, I'm so sorry about your dad. My prayers for you and your family.

Judith and Mavis, thank you. I know that is L in the nest, but more by my gut than having something concrete to point to. May our eagle family and all of us have peaceful sleep.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

At midnight New Orleans time, I checked the DNR eagle. I cannot see her at all, the snow has covered everything. Earlier she was the only dark spot in the nest, however, now there is no dark spot. Liberty is sleeping peacefully with her nose under her wing as the wind roars.
God bless these eagles.

Mavis

6:44 AM EDT April 4th

Just checked on L and she is still sleeping. It is very windy...and is 44º.

This is today's forecast from NOAAA:

Today A 20 percent chance of showers before 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 43. Windy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph increasing to 25 to 30 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.

Tonight Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 29. Blustery, with a northwest wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Saturday Sunny, with a high near 53. West wind around 5 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.

Coleen, a picture was posted on OT late last night of the MN DNR nest...was just like you described except..at that time, the mate flew in and laid on top of the sitting parent to cover her.

Does everyone know the state that has to most Bald Eagles? ALASKA...so if they can handle that extreme cold, maybe the MN eagles can too. I know that the MN DNR eagles have already proven how far they will go to keep thier family safe. They have three beautiful and, finally, well mannered babies.

It is going to be bad enough today to fight the wind and possible rain...so maybe the intruder is gone. L and J have battled the whole winter...they need some peace.

Good morning, everyone....and prayers to Christine and her family.

Mavis

7:21 AM

I hear Justice close by...L has her head in her back feathers sleeping!!

John L.

Christine, may God give you and your family Strength and Comfort.

Mavis

7:26 AM EDT

Let me clairify, I don't know if there was a switch out during the night or not. One parent on the nest sleeping...I heard the other parent close by calling out. Nesting parent still sleeping so it has to be the mate that called out or the sleeping parent would have snapped to attention. Ok...think I just covered myself with that.

Oma K

Just watched Liberty with her back to the wind, interacting briefly with the eaglet under her, wings cocked forward creating a tent. The nest is certainly rockin' and rollin'… Good morning eagle watchers.

Cherrycarol

Liberty just fed the eaglet. Christine so sorry for your loss. I lost my dad 4 years ago & I know how hard it is. Prayers for you & your family. 40 mph winds today. Gee Wizz just can't get a break from this!! Have to get ready for work but my puter is going with.. HAGD all! Carol

Judith Hart

Liberty flew off the nest, little one alone for about 20 sec. Another parent flew in, no tail spot, Justice now sitting, and the wild feather is there. Little one had a feeding.

Amber Gavin

Cristine, Sorry for your loss. My prayers are with your family :(

I had trouble sleeping because I was worried about Justice...I think I'm overly involved. I have to keep telling myself these are not MY birds. Now I think its Justice on the nest. Does anyone know for sure? I don't know where to look for the spot on the tail--is it on the white part? I'm a bit of a novice. I homeschool my 3 kids and this is a huge part of our daily learning. Someone is always at the computer watching!

gmarose6

Can't really go by the way the wings are to identify them since the egg hatched. Liberty will be sitting up more on her wings which will cause the back of her wings to cross. She can't lay completely down like on an egg because she will crush the baby. So she balances with her wings. Glad to hear Justice is OK and back. Yes we will have very high winds today/evening as a front pushes through. The link I posted must not of been on all to see. I'll make sure it is next time. Check in later :)

Mavis

Amber...it is hard to tell J for L sometimes. After a while...you get sort of a feel for it...but that can be wrong.

Justice..for now...has a 'wild' feather that sticks up on the right shoulder (Left as you are looking at his face). Liberty has a black spot high up on the white part of her tail on left side (as viewing from behind) that can only be seen when the tail feathers are spread out. There are a few other things I look at: when side by side...L is bigger than J.....L have a more unkempt hair do whereas J has a sleeker profile over the eyes....L has a more uneven white neck collar in the front. Coleen says L's tail is longer than J's.

We had a couple of change outs already...L was sleeping on the nest ....she flew off...J came in and fed the wee one a couple of bites and settled in to keep it warm...L flew back and took over nesting duties and J flew back off.

Amber...Aaron (coffeechugbooks) has a great organization of teachers from all over who use this site as a teaching guide. He makes a lot of podcasts (videos) for the students...and have a lot of interaction with them. You should visit his site and take a look around. It is amazing. ALSO, I THINK...Alcoa has something on their cam page about teaching aids for teachers. Maybe you might like to check there also. For gosh sake...you ask any question at any time. We are all learning with you and we can just enjoy learning together1

Anyone have the link for Aaron's teaching site? Please post it...if not, I'll look it up.

gmarose6

Yes Amber this is Justice giving Liberty a break. She may not be gone long since baby isn't very old. Never know though.

Mavis

Wow...I never correct myself, but sometimes...it's bad! I make a lot of grammar errors because I think ahead of myself sometimes. Sorry...you all know me by now..

Mr. John...I know you get tired of all our requests. I love the TTV as it is...but because of the intruder yesterday, and the concern over where J was....can you zoom out for today so we can get a better view of the surrounding area. I think J was close by all night. Would also like to see the intruder approach if she visits again, and I have a feeling it is not over with. Just a request if others feel the same way. Thank you..

Dani

I second what Mavis is requesting, I'd like to see a little wider angle of tne tree top view for a day or two, if that's okay. Thanks!
And thanks all for posting that we've seen both parents--I can't get this to come up on my phone, so I didn't get to see any of that this morning before I got in to work.
Christine, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.

Judith Hart

Liberty feeding the little one.

Mavis

9:26 AM EDT

J arrived a few minutes ago. He is standing and L is sitting on wee one. L fed her some pretty good size bites a little while ago. She should be good for a couple of hours but will probably be fed again shortly.

Judith Hart

Justice just arrived on the nest with Liberty...something dark in his talon...whatever it is it's all over his beak.

amberdawn

Christine, I am so very sorry for your loss. Losing a loved one, especially a parent, is a hard cross to bear. May your family have peace and comfort.

Mavis

9:30 AM EDT

Another change over...L got up and flew away...J is not sitting. He has a "dirty" beak from feeding. They are sure active this morning...

Judith Hart

I think Justice brought in a Coot, I see the legs, upper left....He's now sitting

Mavis

Correction: Justice is NOW sitting...L left the nest as I said.

Jo

Congrats on the new Eagle Baby! Sorry y'all, but I've been busy elsewhere (MNBound nest & http://www.ustream.tv/okcowlcam...where I sometimes moderate). I'm so happy Alcoa's had another successful hatching and I will be popping in occasionally to check out the new baby! Again, CONGRATS!

Mavis

Jo...if you stick around. If you moderate another site...maybe you can give your opinion as to why an intruder (adult) would bring straw to a sitting nest? Would love your thoughts on this.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

I made a check of all the eagles this morning, and, in spite of the wind, Davenport seems to be in the best shape. The eagle at DNR in Minnesota is in about six inches of snow in the nest and the mother still has snow all over her. Last night you could not even see her in the snow, she was totally covered.
The eagle at Decorah, Iowa is in snow, however, I did get to see two of the new eaglets and the one, as yet, unhatched eggs. Liberty is sitting like a queen on her nest taking the wind in stride. Amazing birds.

Mavis

10:39 AM EDT

Something has Justice highly upset...he jumped up a couple of times in a crouching stance over the baby and yelling out...wish we could see more.

Judith Hart

Coleen, Thanks for the update.

Judith Hart

Youngster at the nest....trouble again!

Mavis

I don't know what is going on...Podcaster pop up keeps popping up and picture freezes...ALWAYS when something is happening..the picture freezes. Went to NV and baby was on nest alone...went back to TTV...podcast pop up again. I'm more frustrated than the eagles...and you can't see what is going on outside the nest.

Both parents were on the nest and in high alert. Something is going on but sure hard to follow what is going on. Anyone else see it?
