Bea Griffore

Good morning everyone.

Rudy is alone in the nest and the gray blob, gosling/duckling, from yesterday is gone. When did that get eaten?

Carol, you said L & J brought in food and didn't feed Rudy. Was the gray blob gone then already? Have fun at Circa 21 today!

It is so humid this morning that everything is sticky. And the sun is shining. High of 80 today with storms possible tonight. No storms overnight so that's good.

Happy 8 week b-day Rudy! That time sure has gone fast.

Cherrycarol

Yes Bea it was still there. She did peck at it for awhile. I guess L & J r teaching her how to eat. She squeeled the whole time. Rudy has been laying on that I think is a baby goose. There's lots by the river now that r half grown up. Happy Birthday Rudy!! She did a lot of wingersizing this morning & hopping across the nest too. I'm looking forward to Cira. Never seen Fiddler on the Roof.

Mavis

Bea and Carol...Liberty came in earlier this morning and ate what was left of the goose while Rudy watched...then she flew off with the carcass just as Justice flew in with some straw.

Mavis

P.S.

That was at 8:07 EDT this morning that L removed the carcass from the nest. Pictures posted on OT.

Mavis

9:56 AM EDT

Ok...that was it !! My first real cardio workout for the season! Wow! You know that stick that bounces when Rudy backs into it...it is just hanging across the right edge and continues onto the nest? Yeah...that one...well, Rudy was standing on the EDGE doing those wingercises...the very edge on right side. I thought she had gone over when the cam froze!! Had to wait 2 full minutes to see if she was still in the nest. Is 10 am too early for a tall glass of punch?? OH...that's not all...she was standing on the edge..and I mean the edge when she decided to scratch her head earlier. She loses her balance sometimes when she does that...that was almost a cardio workout. Someone needs to feed that baby so she will go into a food coma...I need a break!!

gregory

10 am id too early for some- and not soon enough for others. I love a GOOD bloody mary at or about 10 AM on SUNDAY.

so go ahead MAVIS. also- I have never done corn o the cob in a microwave, but I did know about peeling the husk from the bottom so there is no silk. do it for guest- they are awed over this simple trick. its like the upside down ketchup bottle. all those years we had to struggle with something so easy to fix

Bea Griffore

Mavis, so sorry I missed all that action but then maybe I'm not sorry! Yikes - we don't need her going over the edge!

TTV offline. I tried clicking the play button anyway but that didn't work. :( And now I get the spinning circle on the NV. Might as well get some work done I guess.

Mavis

Greg...I oped for a glass of tea. I never learned to drink the punch but might try it some day. Believe it or not...but corn in the microwave, with the husk on taste much better than boiled corn on the cob. More flavor..try it. You can peel off the outside husks...just leave about 3 layers on the cob.

Rudy is laying down and it looks like a brown furry foot is sticking up beside her. Anyone see this come in? Squirrel?? Hard to tell. I hope not...she will be grumpy all day trying to de-fur that thing. Anyone know what it is?

Mavis

Greg.. I do 3 minutes in microwave for 1 ear of corn

gregory

MAVIS-

after seeing the video- I will probably do it that way from here on. I will sear it on the grill for a minute when it done. I like a few browned kernels. try this-- take an onion and leave the paper on. stab it a few times. mic on high 5 to 8 mins. it will sing in the mic (whistle). serve as a side. the longer it cooks -the softer and sweeter it gets. let me know what you think

Bea Griffore

Mavis and greg, you really should have Iowa sweet corn! I've had corn from other states and it just doesn't compare. Well, maybe my brother's corn in MI is almost as good!

Also, Mavis, I don't think I see the brown furry foot you talked about. Rudy is on the edge of the nest below the A branch and shaking her head to keep the bugs away.

Speaking of those gnats....I missed the news this morning where they were going to talk about how to deal with them. I should check the website and see if I can find a replay of that. Vanilla! I wonder if they mentioned that. Going to look now.....bbl

Wendy

You guys are making me hungry.
Gregory...is your corn o the cob an Irish recipe? :-)

I think Rudy is getting thinner from lack of food.

Bea Griffore

Well, here's the story about the gnats and they didn't even mention vanilla! I didn't know there were 2 kinds we have to deal with here! http://www.kwqc.com/story/25627071/gnats-are-back-in-the-qca

Rudy is still under the A branch and it looks like her neck is right up against the bottom of that branch. The nest sure sounds dry when she moves around. That's a good thing since the gnats like it moist. I still think she needs a couple dabs of vanilla!

Bea Griffore

Wendy, I thought the same thing first thing this morning. She does need to thin out so she can branch/fledge/fly better when it's time. But, it seems like a big thinning very quickly. I guess she will learn to eat on her own faster if she gets really hungry.

Sure wish the TTV cam would come back online.

Grag, that onion sounds like it would be a great compliment with steak!

Bea Griffore

Oops, Greg, not grag! Sorry about that - darn fingers.

Bea Griffore

WOW - some amazing zooming in on the TTV! Love it!

gregory

WENDY-

the corn on the cob isn't a recipe but a process that MAVIS shared. she also posted a video that is really cool. the unhusked ear of corn is zapped in a mic for 4 or five mins. then cut at the bottom and the ear falls out without any silk and is ready to eat simple easy peasy. I shared my caramelized whole onion. last year -someone did a terrific recipe with jiffy corn mix and corn and other ingredients to make a soufflé. I wish they would post it again.

R L ML

Really like the photo shared with this latest post. The wing tip and tail feathers are just amazing to view. Thanks.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

Rudy needs someone to talk to, wish I were there, I would speak and whistle like I do to my eagles. I looked at her during the night, whatever the fuzzy thing was was eaten, probably a rabbit. She was rearranging the straw early this morning around 5 a.m.
We are in a tornado watch and flash flood warning here in southeast Louisiana. A tornado has touched down in two spots about 30 miles from me. I don't mind rain but the lightning surely scares me (and Rudy).

Judith Hart

The cotton balls I see floating by the screen, are they from the Cottonwood tree?

I can't believe how tall Rudy is, her shoulders come to the top of the A branch.
If she would just step to the left she'd be looking into the camera.

Bea Griffore

Coleen, stay safe! Not a good weather situation going on there. You do have me confused about the "fuzzy thing" you mentioned. Yesterday it was called a small duck or goose and it was reported that it was still there this morning by Carol. I don't remember anyone mentioning that a rabbit was seen. Not impossible to have a rabbit in the nest but I didn't see it reported by anyone else. The "gray blob", as I called it, is definitely gone now. And I've thought too that Rudy needs a companion to talk to or even fight over food with. :) She seems so lonely at times.

Judith, I haven't seen those cotton balls. Since I don't have cottonwood trees I'm not sure what they send out into the air. I'll have to study on that and learn. If they do send out cotton balls, that's not going to be good for AC units! Oh wait, maybe I did see something fly by! I could see better if it floated but what I saw did more of a zoom by.

I'm having an issue with the TTV. If I click High quality and go full screen the pic freezes. Anyone else have this happen?
bbl

Bea Griffore

Oh, I just saw one of those floaters and I do think it's from the cottonwood tree based on what I just learned in my field guide to North American trees.

gregory

OH LORD TODAY--

BEA--YOU said steak!!! WE haven't had steak in a year-no fooling. things have been sooooo tight. SOON though! we may be in for a little streak of good luck. beef is so high that if you cant afford the best -one has to wait. (don't eat cheap beef) we did have a high grade of beef for HAMBURGER for the holiday and Gary went googoo for it.. we may have our first real cut- bone in ribeye or a T-bone or a porterhouse in a week or two. I will shop to no end and it will be the best,

gregory

SORRY-but I call that BRANCHING by the definition set earlier.

gregory

that bird is not in her nest-- she is definitely out on that tiny limb.

gregory

these parents know what they are doing and they are going for an early fledge! RUDY is hungry!

gregory

EVERYBODY SETTLE--

RUDY will turn and hop back in her cradle. watch and see!!

gregory

BUT just in case--
one man on the ground.

gregory

am I the only one that saw that?

Cristine

Thunderstorms moving through the Q.C. area right now, right along I-80. Looking very windy at the nest, but maybe the rain is staying South. I hear a lot of thunder in the distance here at the farm. Hang on Little Rudy!

Judith Hart

Goodness! It was calm and peaceful, I let my dogs out, come back and it's wild and windy. Looks like it's sneaking right up on the nest. Maaaaaa Paaaaaa where are you??
Weather radar
http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=DVN&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

Cristine

Yes. It definitely looks like its raining there now, doesn't it? And Liberty is not there to protect Rudy anymore. That answers my question from the other day. At least Rudy knows enough to flatten herself in the nest during a storm, thank goodness.

Bea Griffore

Oh my goodness! That wind! I just got home from planting flower pots on main street of my town and can hardly believe what I'm seeing at the nest! It's sunny and a little windy here but nothing like at Alcoa. Hang on Rudy! What a smart one she is, all hunkered down flat.

Cristine, stay safe!

Bea Griffore

Judith, I checked your radar link and I don't think I'm gong to get much at home but the QC sure is getting it. TTV lense is foggy looking but I'm sure it's rain. The A branch is wet.

Cristine, do you wish you could keep her company? Oh no, you'll need to be with your cats under the stairs. Yep, way to high up for any of us!

Bea Griffore

Gregory, I guess none of us saw what you saw that looked like branching. I'm glad she's laying down now!

Cristine

Thank for putting up the radar Judith. That rain just keeps developing over the same line. We have had rain here for over an hour, but are not getting that nasty wind like the nest is getting. I can't believe you didn't get any of this, Bea!

Cristine

No need to hide under the stairs with the cats this time, Bea :) But it's always ready!

Bea Griffore

Cristine, I know - I can't believe it either! I'm so glad I don't live in a tree house.

gregory

SHE BRANCHED!!!!

gregory

look at the times on my post

gregory

if you look at the view from away--she was up on the far side limb and not part of the nest. close up view --she was up almost past camera view.

gregory

on that outreaching limb on her left!!

Judith Hart

Are you saying she was up on the Alcoa branch?

Mavis

Judy, I think Greg is referring to the limb on the far side of the nest that the juvies that visited the nest last winter liked to perch on. It is like an extension of the nest. If looking at the TTV...it would be at the 11 o'clock position.

Greg, when I think of branching...it is as I said before...it is when Rudy flaps her wings and jumps or flies to a nearby branch....not a branch she just steps out on. The Alcoa branch is the branch I think all the other eaglets in the past have used for their first branching. The A branch takes some wing flapping and a little air lift to reach.

Cherrycarol

She is sitting as close to the edge as she can. I missed the rain. I was inside at the play & it was AWESOME!! Fiddler on the Roof. I'd love to see the original movie now. Carol

Cristine

Rudy is acting so hungry. Pecking at every little thing in the nest. Has anyone seen ANY food brought into the nest today. Has anyone even seen Liberty or Justice?

Bea Griffore

Cristine, I think Carol said L & J were there this morning. I have not seen them all day but haven't been here the whole time either.

Rudy still alone and shaking her head because of the gnats. Poor thing!

Joyce

Hi all from Calf. We have fires again here in the state. Wish we had your rain sometimes, but not the twisters. Bea, Do you do the flower pots with a garden club?Modesto Ca. has the largest garden club in the country. Over 500 members. Mine here in Sonora has 46. Greg.Costco has the best beef. And they will cut it for you. My hubby and I love the ribeye! Carol, Fiddler movie is the best of all of the musicals on screen. "If I were a rich man". Love it. I will post my corn casserole receipe later. Now about the birds! I can never catch any movement when I go online. Rudy is always hunkered down. I'm 3 hrs. behind here in the West. Glad to read all of the postings from such fun people. Joyce in Cali.

Cristine

Those gnats will absolutely drive a person stir-crazy! They swarm around your head, dive- bomb your face, and buzz in your ears... and they bite! I have itchy welts all over my neck and shoulders just from planting flowers. I hope they can't bite birds. Poor Rudy.

Mavis

Cristine...I do not know if this will work...but...a nurse friend stopped by the pharmacy the other night. We were talking about no-see bug repellants...she just came back from a missionary trip to S. America. She said they used the original Listerine Mouth Wash (the yellow) and put it in spray bottles and used it as a repellant and they were not bothered with the insects. Like I said...I'm just repeating what she said.

Bea Griffore

Joyce is CA, those wildfires are aweful! No I don't belong to a garden club. The American Legion Auxiliary plants the pots as a community service project. Ladies sign up to plant their favorite pot(s) so it's interesting to see the different combinations they all come up with.

Not sure I'd like smelling like Listerine but if it works it would be worth it! I dabbed on vanilla before planting today and didn't get one bite. I forgot the vanilla Memorial Day and have bites from then.

Well, nobody reported seeing L or J tonight or that Rudy ate except for picking around in the nest. And Carol said Rudy didn't get fed this morning when they brought in food. I sure hope they bring food tomorrow and she fights them for it! How long can eagles/eaglets go without food? I know I should know that. Guess I better look it up. Time to call it a night. Rudy is sleeping. It's a beautiful night out there tonight. sed

Judith Hart

I didn't see L or J, but I do see what appears to be part of a fish at 12:00 on the NV.
The cotton balls are really flying this morning.

Judith Hart

Liberty just brought in a catfish.

Bea Griffore

Good morning Judith and everyone. What a beautiful morning it is too! Sunny and much cooler which feels awesome after the heat and humidity of the last few days.

Rudy is moving something around that looks like a spine. Wish we knew if she got to eat this morning or if she dug that up from the nest. I really want to see her pig out on something! Now she is on the very edge of the nest and doing her wingersizing and jumping up. Might be a cardio-workout day. OH fish delivery and Rudy is squealing as the fish just lays there. Come on Rudy - tear it up and eat!

Cherrycarol

GM Yes Judith it looks like Rudy is eating something. Going to be a lot cooler today. They were talking about the gnats on the news last night & they said Listerine works too. I have a busy day at work but I'm taking this since she is getting closer to branching. HAGD. Carol

Bea Griffore

Finally mom starts to feed Rudy!

Cherrycarol

She gave in. Don't forget they have crops & when it's full they can go 1 week to 10 days without eating. That was on the eagle show last night which was the Decorah one.

Bea Griffore

Hi Carol, thanks for that reminder about how long they can go without food. I did do some research last night but didn't read that and I missed the eagle show last night too. Have a great day at work and say HI to your customers watching at your salon.

Looks like just a piece of that fish left. Maybe the head? So happy Rudy finally got to eat! And here is a parent on the A branch. I think it'sJustice - haven't seen a tail spot but I could be wrong.

Yes, Judith, lots of cotton balls this morning!

Cristine

Good morning all! Rudy must be full as she looks very content laying there right now next to that fish head! It sort of looks like Justice to me standing next to her in the nest.

We got almost a half of inch of rain out of that little storm yesterday. Great for the corn and soybeans which are trying to emerge!

Thanks for the info on the Listerine, Mavis, and the vanilla, Bea. Next time I go outside I am going to use both at the same time.... just to be sure! Now I need to find something that works for the torturous itch of all of these bites. Yikes. Driving me crazy. I gave my bottle of Calamine lotion to my daughter for her Poison Ivy.

Bea Griffore

Cristine, yikes! Poison ivy! Not good. Let's see, I've used a hydrocortisone lotion on all kinds of itchies and it usually works pretty good. I've also taken an allergy pill which seems to help - just a generic one good for 12 hours and nondrowsy formula. I love seeing the fields where the crops are just coming up. The rows remind me of soldiers all in a row. The daughters of my last boss called corn "baby corns" and I always thought that was so cute.

Yes, Rudy seems very content right now with Justice on guard. It's nice to see Rudy have company.

Rachel Gaines

Watching Rudy have an early lunch snack, but I'm not sure what it is.
Happy eight week birthday, Rudy.
You're looking mighty fine this morning.
Good day to everyone, and to our eagle pair, Liberty and Justice.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

Have we determined if Rudy is male or female?
Poor only child is standing there waiting for Mom to feed it; however, she is adamant that her child feed itself. If Rudy doesn't stick its beak in and eat, Mom will have devoured all of that fish that's been sitting there for a few hours.

Judith Hart

L or J just brought in a young duck or goose then took something out of the nest. Now another parent brought in a fish.
I think Rudy while fooling around with the young goose may have dropped it over the side.

Bea Griffore

Another fish delivery by a parent whose tail I can't see good enough. Rudy is squeeing so the parent feeds her. Oh, she's going to have to learn sooner or later!

Coleen, I think most of us are just assuming Rudy is female. Usually the first hatched is female and judging by the hatch date Rudy has to be from the first egg laid. Of course, we all really don't know for sure since no testing has been or will done. I hope your weather has gotten better than when you had the tornado watch the other day.

Jo

Howdy all, Popped in to see Rudy and Liberty on nest, glad to see they're both doing ok even though it's rather windy there. They grow up so fast don't they!
Hope all in that area are doing well and surviving all the storms.
Greg and others, thanks for the corn and onion ideas! Sounds great!

Jo

Nice size fishie on the nest. Rudy looks interested but doesn't seem to be sure what to do. I'm sure she'll figure it out before long ;)

R L ML

Rudy did figure it out. She looked up at parent with mouth open and nothing happened so she turned around a few times and started eating and kept it up for quite a while. She doesn't have the technique for holding the fish down quite worked out.

gregory

thaty is where she wAS!!!!!

LOOKKYYY LOOKY-- BRANCHING

gregory

OOOPsy --I see better now-- still in the nest -- OH WELL.- my bad

gregory

YUP-- I goofed again- that is what I saw day before yesterday, sorry..

but still a nice step into the future.

Cherrycarol

Rudy I wish you'd sit on that stick the other way so we can see your pretty face. Yes she's getting closer every day.

gregory

BEA -you were right and so was MAVIS-
I saw the same thing today and it does not match MAVIS' criteria. I got too excited!

JOYCE- I went a little poor pitiful on the the beef. I have a Costco card and will look into it a little further.

Judith Hart

I've never seen a Bald Eagle within touching distance and I've been wondering how large the foot actually is. Not counting the talons, are the toes the same size as a humans fingers?

Bea Griffore

R L ML, yes I saw her eating earlier when you did and she does need to learn to hold the food down while she tears at it. But she did manage to eat some anyway. That's a big step in the right direction.

Judith, good question! I have been close enough to touch an eagle but honestly can't say about the toes. I was more in awe at being so close and how tall an eagle really is! The one I saw was standing on the floor at Bald Eagle Days, tethered so he couldn't get away, and seriously it was like standing next to a child he was so tall - almost to my waist! I bet CHERRYCAROL could answer your question.

Rudy is just standing on the edge with all the green leaves in the background and she looks pretty awesome! What a beautiful evening we're having and I think Rudy loves it.

Bobbie

Rudy standing on side of nest looking at her domain! The trees are so green behind her.

Judith Hart

Here come the cotton ball seeds. They must release at certain times of the day. I think I see a few of them on a stem right behind Rudy's head.

Judith Hart

I hope Rudy doesn't snort one of those up her nares!

Cherrycarol

GM Judith I've seen pictures of a mans fist & an eagle foot & they are the same size. I'd say the talons too. AMAZING!! Only 60 now so I'm sure this feels good to Rudy. Someone told me the gnats only last 2 weeks. Lets hope so. I;ve noticed all the eagles r fighting them. Off too work. Carol

beamg

GM Carol, I'm so glad you could answer Judith's question. I could have guessed but wasn't sure about my guess. That really is amazing! Have a good day at work.

Rudy is on the rail again this morning. Oh my, wingersizing and hopping across the nest now! Wow - that's so cool to watch. Hopefully the gnats will only be around another week or so. Rudy is really shaking her head to get rid of them. I love all the birds singing in the area! I think we better keep a close watch today - Rudy is so active right now with moving things around and hopping all over the place. She's going to be up on that A branch before we know it! HAGDA

beamg

A parent just flew in with a fish which Rudy grabbed right away but now isn't doing anything with it. She really squealed when she knew it was coming! And now she's eyeing it like she's wondering what to do and then makes a couple pecks at it and backs away. You can do it Rudy - eat!

beamg

Finally the parent started feeding Rudy. I still can't tell if it's L or J.

Cristine

Beautiful morning at the nest! I don't seen any trace of the fish. Did they eat it all that fast? or is Rudy laying on it? She looks very content laying there staring over the edge of the nest at her world.

At the Outdoor show last year in the Q.C. I saw an eagle on display at one booth. (It was not alive, apparently one a taxidermist had done.) Anyway, I know I wasn't supposed to, but I just had to go up to it and pet it. I just had to know what those feathers felt like. So there's my confession. I am so bad! But, I have touched an eagle :)

Looking forward to Rudy jumping to the A branch hopefully this weekend! (right, Judith?)

Have a great day everyone.

Mavis

Lib brought a fish in earlier this morning. Rudy mantled it then moved away. Lib waited a while then started eating it. It is hard to eat with the squeals Rudy vocalized, but she did. I think Lib was using the "you snooze...you lose" approach...meaning if you don't eat it while you have a chance...I will!
Maybe Rudy will learn to start working on the next meal brought to the nest instead of waiting for L or J to feed her.

Joyce

Rudy is like a spoiled only child. I like the snooze you lose approach. Thanks for the no-see'um spray idea. I got bit up in Puerto Vallarta because you don't see um. Rudy sure does the balancing act , living on the edge routine now. She'll get up the courage to do a bit of a leap soon. Off to set up garden club plant sale. I read the comments here to see what I missed. Thanks for so much info.

Bea Griffore

Well my goodness! I just listened to the train going by the nest and at the same time one was going through my little town, both blowing their horns at the same time! Since I'm at least 30 miles away it can't be the same one but it sure got my attention.

It's so quiet and peaceful sounding at the nest right now. I hope Rudy loves that as much as I do. Guess I better go fill my feeder and put our fresh water for my birds. bbl

Bea Griffore

Cristine, I can't even imagine you being so naughty as to touch that eagle! lol Good for you though. So, how did it feel?

Wendy

Did anyone just see what I saw? J/L came to nest and Rudy was making sounds like a puppy and pacing around nest. Then tried to get under J/L and was rejected so started nipping at parent still making puppy noises. Almost made me cry. Rudy seems so lonely.

Wendy

Now parent hovering over Rudy trying to shade. Hope she stays a while.

R L ML

Parent still on nest with Rudy at 1:00 CDT when the TTV went offline. When they were standing together then Rudy looked as big as parent.

Judith Hart

Fish delivery, parent standing there, Rudy looking at it...Rudy pulling the fish tail..she just doesn't know how to break through the skin yet.

Annette Kryske

4:39 PM PDT. This is what we are waiting for. Rudy,is finally fledging. It won't be too long until she is gone for good. Then we all will be waiting until next year. I am really sad in a way. I guess we are happy for the outcome. Just think, maybe Rudy, might come back when it is time for her to lay her eggs. I might be watching from Heaven (I hope).

Judith Hart

Liberty brought in a fish and fed it to Rudy, it was gone in minutes. Rudy's happy now, jumping, flapping and eying the A branch.

Bea Griffore

Good afternoon all.

I tuned in just in time to see a parent bring in a fish. Rudy is squealing but not doing anything with the fish - yet.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

Rudy is squealing and a parent is on the nest. Rudy is on a small branch and the wind is blowing like crazy.

Bea Griffore

Coleen, yes she sure is squealing and completely ingorning the fish the parent brought in just a few minutes ago. The parent isn't doing anything with it either. Must be waiting to see what Rudy does.

Rudy is on the very edge of the nest, on a slightly raised up branch that's part of the nest, just gazing out now at her world.

Annette, are you saying you saw Rudy branch yesterday? Just wondering.

hagda

Cherrycarol

Looks like mom is eating the fish & Rudy is just squeeling at her. Annette she hasn't fledged yet & she hasn't branched ye either. Still waiting for that. Pretty Hot & windy out again. I finally can watch & do some book work.

Cherrycarol

Dad I think brought in a fish put it by her feet. She squeeled some more. & now is just sitting there. DAAHH! Come on Rudy!!

Annette Kryske

Carol and Gregory, I "oops",when I wrote that our Rudy has fledged. I meant she is now "Branching".I almost typed blanching.. No, I didn't have any wine with my grilled cheese sandwich, for lunch. I am actually a bit depressed as I didn't go to my Grandson's wedding in South Carolina today.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

Does anyone know what kind of tree houses the nest?

Bea Griffore

Coleen, the nest is in a Cottonwood tree.

Annette, I don't think Rudy has branched either yet.

Rudy and a parent are together again. It's still windy but at least Rudy isn't sitting on the edge. It looks like the parent's foot is on some half eaten thing. Fish?

Did anyone notice if it rained at the nest this afternoon? I had just a little rain here but a lot of wind too. A little wind is ok. It keeps the gnats away!
