Skedaddle

I think she was trying to get out of that horrible wind. She sure did tuck in tight against the trunk!

Bobbie

Sure looks fierce!!

Roger Skromme

I agree she does look very fierce

Cherrycarol

Squeeeeking as usual!! LOL Great Shots!!

Cherrycarol

Still in the nest.

Cherrycarol

Rudy must know it's going to ran. She is still in the nest

Coleen Perilloux Landry

After seeing the close-ups of Rudy I have to admit, I think Rudy is a boy. His beak is thicker and has a hook. I so wanted it to be Miss Rudy.
Have tried to post five times today but couldn't pass the "letters" test.

Mavis

Sure appreciate the thumbs up on the new thread. I wondered why no one was posting. I love my "duh" moments!

Those were some good screen captures! I especially like the first one. The beak does not go far enough back under the eye for the female characteristic. Hello, Mr. Rudy!

Hate I missed today's panning but glad Rudy was spotted. I appreciate the pictures...they made me smile when I saw them. Thanks

Judith Hart

It took me four times to get the code in just to post NEW THREAD. I've been over there talking to myself until almost 9:00.....that makes two days in a row!

Mavis

Well, who am I, Judy? Nobody?? I was talking with ya! Even more frightening is that you answered!!

Bea Griffore

Good morning everyone.

Nobody home at this early hour. I'm sorry I missed the panning yesterday. I was busy all day again. Kind of breezy this morning. I only hear a few birds singing.

So, we now think Rudy is a male. Well, that's hard to get use to after all this time but based on things we know I have to agree after seeing the above pics. Ok Mr. Rudy where are you this morning?

PS....I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who can talk to myself! LOL

Cherrycarol

GOOD MORNING BEA Your up early About 63 out & cloudy. It never did rain last night. Maybe Rudy slept in a tree,

Judy if u get on facebook u don't have to do the # thing or re check in every time either,

Judith Hart

I just saw Liberty or Justice fly by the back of the nest then head out over the water. Rudy squealed from somewhere in the tree leaves.

Cherrycarol

I hear her. Must be hungry! Boy it's windy again!! Must be getting breakfast/ Wish I was there now.

Bea Griffore

Carol, yes I was up WAY too early! But I do like the early morning hours before the whole world wakes up and makes noise. It's so peaceful outside. The temp is great so I sat outside drinking my coffee.

Judy, I heard that squealing too but didn't see the parent. I was trying to watch from the corner of my eye and it didn't work. I think Carol is trying to give you a hint....

What happened to the trutle shell?

Skedaddle

No, Bea, you're not the only self-talker. I just try not to do it so publicly! ;^J!

Cherrycarol

Maybe Rudy followed the parents to the river to watch & learn. It's time for that. Judy & Mavis I had to read what u guys said last night. I had a good receipt for cheese cake but don't know if I still have it or not. I'll look when I have time.

Bea Griffore

Skedaddle, too funny! I don't do all of my self-talking publicly which I'm sure everyone is thankful for. My hubby catches me doing it around here and makes fun of me. Oh well.

I checked the weather and there's a good chance we'll have storms again. All we got last night was a lot of wind but at least we don't have to do a lot of picking up sticks this time. High of 86 for today. We tried to get to our friend's place on the Cedar River a couple days ago - can't get there with all the flooding! For those not from this area, the Cedar is west of me and is just as prone to flooding as the Mississippi. Sure wish we could send rain to parts of the country that need it so badly.

Time to get ready for the day. bbl

Bea Griffore

Carol, I love cheesecake but only use a mix. Yup, the lazy way! Apple pie is one of my favorites to make. But, I bet Cristine makes a better one than I do!

NOW it's time to get ready for the day.

Cherrycarol

If I didn't have to go to work I'd be at the river in hopes to see them. Off to work I go! HAGD ALL

Judith Hart

I make a cheesecake using ricotta cheese as the main ingredient, it's much lighter and turns out nice and tall.

Judith Hart

L was just in the nest, Rudy flew in from the left, mantling, I can't see what's under her.

Bea Griffore

Judith, I heard the noise and saw that too! Is it a fish this time? I briefly saw it just before Rudy came in and blocked the view. Looked like a fish then. Rudy is just not going to let us see!

Judith Hart

It looks like a bowfin (dogfish) I think.

Bea Griffore

What the heck is Rudy making all the noise about?

Bea Griffore

If s/he gets any closer to the edge, the fish is going to go over the side! Tha fish has been all over the nest while Rudy eats.

Judith Hart

Bea, I still can't believe he swallowed that entire leg bone of the duck, that bone was really long and went right down the throat like a sword swallower. Perhaps he brought it back up when we weren't looking.

Judith Hart

Rudy just took off and headed toward the tree near the water....then came back with L or J in the nest. I don't know if the parent dropped anything off or not.

Cristine

Good morning. Rudy just flew back into the nest and had Justice with her. Started squealing like a little baby when Justice tried to finish off the fish, even snagging it out of Justice's mouth. Another life lesson learned, I guess. Don't leave your leftovers laying around or someone else might eat them!

Bea Griffore

Ready for the day and I see I missed some action. Is the fish gone now?

Judith, that leg bone swallowing was incredible! Remember the Decorah eaglet that swallowed the squirrel tail whole? How do they get all those weird things down the hatch?

Cristine - I think you're right about another lesson learned. GM!

I love seeing Rudy's back feathers right now. Oh, and off she goes to the right...and it looks like yes the fish is gone.

Judith Hart

I hear the Blue Jays calling like they're harassing someone, I hope it isn't Rudy.
I saw a picture of one that landed on the back of the Berry eaglet, and one buzzing D18 the Decorah eaglet on the mulch pile.

Judith Hart

Justice in the nest plucking a small bird.

Dennis Kwiecien

Why is the picture so slow when not many people on? Just ready to watch Mom take off, then, instead of watching her fly, she just dissappeared??? Is it a programming problem?

Judith Hart

Dennis, I think that herky jerky movement seems to happen more in the wind.

Judith Hart

Dennis, This is what Mr. John posted a few threads back.
As for the choppy freeze/unfreeze video. We have been seeing lower than promised upload speeds from our internet provider. Hopefully they will get whatever problems they are experiencing fixed soon.

Bea Griffore

Did Justice eat the small bird or did Rudy come in to eat more? I see no signs of it.

BARGE going down river!

Bobbie

1:35 PM Nest Time
Bea, I also talk to myself. At least the voice in my head always agrees with me!!

Mavis

2:39 PM EDT

Still seems to be windy at the nest. Love the bigger view of the river and ground below on the right. Would like to see more of Rudy but don't think that will happen now that he has found his wings. I'd fly too, if I were him. Hope he is learning some fishing skills. I have a hard time catching a fish with a rod and reel...let alone my toes! I'd just starve to death if I had to hunt and catch my food. Good thing we have grocery stores! I do like that everything is eaten raw....no cooking...no clean up...no mess. Just can't wrap myself around that thought without gagging. Other than that...I'd go for it!!

Judy, I hope you find that recipe because I'm looking for a ricotta cheese cake next time I go up. Geez...you know I've been looking for a good recipe!

Lazy afternoon...the kind I like best.

Rachel Gaines

Congratulations, Rudy, on your fledge.
You are growing into a beautiful eagle, just like your mom and dad.
We'll miss you when you leave for good.
Best wishes to our eagle family.

Blessed weekend to everyone

Bea Griffore

Rudy is in the nest. I have no clue how long she's been there. It's blowing like crazy and she is just looking all around.

Bobbie, sounds like we're all in good company! :)

bbl

Wendy

I saw mention of Rudy swallowing the bird leg bone and recall recently that an eagle being x-rayed for some problem also showed a bone from a deer. Don't remember if it was on a wildlife show or from one of Judy's links that I saw this, but was surprised they would eat this even if a fawn. I always hate to see the catch of the day, whatever it may be, but am glad that nothing is ever wasted for the animal's sake.

Bea/Mavis if you're looking for a quick and easy cheesecake recipe I have one that just uses a cool whip, sugar and cream cheese mixture on a graham crust. It's not real cheesecake, more like a cream pie and I put Comstock brand blueberries or cherries on top. Think it was on a Cool Whip container.

I am putting a call out for anyone with experience with a Mallard nesting. There is a mom one week in with the nest against my west side exposure family room of my brick house. She gets all of the afternoon sun and I'm afraid if I put something like a patio chair to block the sun, she may abandon the nest, even if I do it while she's gone for a break. Any ideas? Also, I'm not planning on raising the ducklings as it will be two months before they fly and I'm always seeing hawks overhead in my area. Mom will have to make the trek to some water source with them that will have to cross streets and I'm dreading that day as I'll probably have to go with them. Any helpful ideas?

Cherrycarol

Wendy I don't have any ideas. Boy Good Luck. I'd have to do the same thing. Make sure they make across the road. Very muggy out but no rain yet.

Bea Griffore

Here is a copy and paste from SOAR with the Decorah eaglet:

~Update on the Decorah Juvenile Eagle June 28, 2014~

Message from Kay Neumann, Executive Director SOAR

"The juvenile eagle is out of surgery. It was not an easy surgery because there was not much bone to connect to on the shoulder end of the humerus. (Versus a break in the middle of the bone.) Dr. Dirks got the pin in and the wing is wrapped and he has woken up from the anesthesia. So far so good."

That is all the news right now. We thought we should post and at least let you know he did have the surgery and he is awake. We will post more details later. Kay is a little busy right now.
------------------------------

I sure that juvie makes it ok. He's in the right hands.

Our nest is empty.

Judith Hart

Wendy, You could either do nothing .....or.... you could buy some shade fabric or that black roll that you use to redo your screens. Hammer a few stakes in the ground, then use a staple gun to secure the screening to the stakes.
Might work, who knows!

Cherrycarol

Dinner is here & I hear Rudy

Cristine

I thought I heard him too Carol, but he is no where to be seen. Did not show up in the nest to help eat whatever that thing is that Justice is eating.

Judith Hart

I wish Rudy would land and not puff out the feathers mantling, so I could see who looks larger, Justice or Rudy.

Cristine

Judith.... that WOULD be great to be able to make that comparison side by side.

Cristine

Ooops! The little squealer is in the nest! Too late for supper :)

Cristine

Looks like he found a little something to nibble on. Not sure if it's edible or not.

Cherrycarol

The Celebration Belle is going by. I got to drive it when we went on it for my 50th birthday. It's a dinner cruise boat ride. Lots of fun & music & dancing.

Rudy your too late.

Judith Hart

Rudy landed. Was that the Celebration Belle that just went by?

Cherrycarol

WOW It's pouring down here.

Cristine

I see that little spot on the radar directly over the Quad Cities. I wonder If the nest will get it next.

Bea Griffore

I see rain drops on the cam now.

Cristine

Oh yes.... here it comes!

Bea Griffore

Not a drop at my house.

Carol, pouring at yours?

Cristine? Are you in line for it?

Judith Hart

I didn't see that storm sneaking up from the west....Here's the radar loop
http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=DVN&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

Bea Griffore

Oh boy, looks like bigger stuff coming!

Judith Hart

S.W. I think, that next storm is big. Don't think I'd care to out on a boat with what's coming.

Cristine

That little cell went around us, but I see more rain developing to our SW. Maybe we will get a little of that. Nothing severe, thank goodness. Rudy is in his safe spot. I have to get used to calling him a "him."

R L ML

looks like Rudy is riding out the rain in his favorite spot.

Cherrycarol

The Celebration Belle is really big so it wouldn't be bed except u couldn't go outside

Yep in his favorite spot!!

Bobbie

7:35 PM Nest Time
Rudy's in his favorite spot back corner right side of nest right under Y branch. Looks like a rocky ride for him,at least for now. Rain has stopped in EM across river from nest

Judith Hart

I thought I saw him fly off to the right, it was a quick glance, down past the tree below shaped like a tuning fork.

Cristine

Rudy just flew in from the left. He is now laying down in the nest looking down over the left side. Must be tired from all of that flying around.

Cherrycarol

He did & now back laying in the nest.

Judith Hart

I see that Blue Jay that's annoying Rudy, on the branch on the right that looks like it hangs over the nest.

Judith Hart

They just took a dive at him.

Judith Hart

That last one looked like it got him on the head. TTV very blurry today!

Cristine

Coyotes very close and very eerie sounding.

Judith Hart

Cristine, they sound a little different, I wonder if they have young.

Wendy, I found this link for you on the Mallard Duck. Be sure to read the second section on what you can do to help.
http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/about/faqs/birds/nestpot/nest.htm

Cristine

Judith... They did sound different. You may be right about them having young ones. I am going to read that article about the Mallards, too. Wendy, you have quite a dilemma and I feel for you.

Judith Hart

I was doing a little reading on that site I gave to Wendy. Did you know a group of Eagles is called a CONVOCATION....I didn't know that, learned something new today!

Cristine

And I was surprised that Ma Mallard will lead her little family to her chosen wetland which could be up to three miles away! Great article, Judith.

Judith Hart

I hope Wendy likes long walks.
Coyotes average litter size is 5 to 7 pups, but where food is abundant they have been known to have 19 pups. GADS! No wonder there's so many running around.

Cristine

19 pups! Wow. I did not know that! I think coyotes are beautiful animals. I'll bet their pups are adorable.

Cristine

More rain on the way.

Wendy

Judy...thanks for the link. It had some good information. My hubby and I moved our metal mesh patio table directly in front of the nest while mom was out and she found her way back in fine. I couldn't use stakes since the area directly in front of the nest is our concrete patio. The nest is in a narrow cutout for flowers between the house and patio with the sun coming mostly from the side. Last year she built a nest behind my clematis on an adjacent wall, but ended up abandoning maybe because I still had my dog at the time. Will see what happens, but you're right about a very long walk that crosses several urban busy streets. Ugh!

Cristine

The storm is hitting the nest. Rudy just came down from his perch in the "safe spot" and now is laying flat in the bottom of the nest.

Cristine

There is only one viewer. I guess I am alone and talking to myself :)

Cherrycarol

GM Boy u stayed up late Cristine. That storm woke me up. I hope that's all the rain we get for awhile Really wet out there.
Having a cook out here at the condos where I live today at 4:30. So I hope it doesn't rain then.

Rudy is gone now.

Bea Griffore

Hi Carol. I hope your cook out doesn't get rained out! I haven't checked my rain guage yet and I slept through all the rain. At least my husband said it rained a lot.

Cristine, I think you stopped just short of talking to yourself early this morning. LOL Were you awake because of the storm?

I wonder when Rudy left the nest. No sign of him this morning. Don't even hear any calls from him. Maybe later.....

Judith Hart

I hear sounds of Rudy!

Cristine

We ended up having just .3 inches of rain here at the farm, but I am sure the nest had a lot more than that in the two storms combined. It was absolutely pouring while I was watching late! I have a hard time sleeping if I know a storm is coming:) It was interesting to see Rudy lay down in the nest when the storm first hit, and then when it was over, he went back to his favorite spot and perched. He is one smart eagle!

Bea Griffore

We had 1/2" last night.

A bit ago I heard Rudy calling but didn't see him. I watched and watched - no Rudy. Maybe at supper time?

I got an email notice that the whooping crane cam is live. They have a new pond, the holding pen is up and the chicks arrive July 10. I have no clue how many this year. Here is the cam link:

http://www.ustream.tv/migratingcranes?utm_source=crowd-live-backend&utm_medium=visit-channel&utm_campaign=notifications

I had such fun watching them last year and then watched them arrive in FL in person. Very cool!
bbl

Mavis

Thanks for the link, Bea...I want to check that out. Those cranes are amazing.

The nest is still empty. I still feel bad he did not have a sibling to play and learn with. He has the traits to be a sruvivor...and I hope he can interact with the other juvies when he leaves. I would hate for him to ba a loner.

The train just sounded off, and evening is settling in.

Judith Hart

I hear music. I think Rudy took today off and went to the party. Probably flying away with a hotdog right now!

Judith Hart

Rudy just landed.

Judith Hart

L or J just brought in some grass, funny! Rudy picking through it, like, am I supposed to eat this?

Judith Hart

It looks like matted grass, the kind that gets stuck under your mower deck, wwhen you cut wet grass.

Blue Jays harassing Rudy again.

Mavis

I hear the blue jays but too blurry to see them. You aren't gonna believe this...but I hear music...dang

Cristine

I am hearing the Blue Jay calling out. Sometimes it sounds as if Rudy is answering back.

Glad to see Rudy in the nest because a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Rock Island County and counties North and West until 3:00 A.M. This includes the Quad Cities, and maybe you, Bea!

I am hearing the music from the Captains Table across the river, too.

Mavis

Cristine...maybe that is what we are hearing...music that is being carried by the wind. It happens...if the conditions are just right.

Judy...I never thought I would say this...but I think a Blue Jay snack would be just right for Rudy. I hate bullies...and Blue Jays know how to pester their victims. Kind of surprised L or J doesn't show up.

Wind has kicked up a notch from earlier this evening.

Mavis

It is a sharp contrast when the picture goes from shades of green to shades of silver and greys in the blink of an eye. There is a beauty to the night colors.

I don't hear the Blue Jays anymore...this is good. I think Rudy is home for the night and I like that. I much rather he be on the nest during the approaching storm.

Wendy

I'm with you Mavis. That blue jay attacked Rudy at least twice. I wish he would show it who the boss is.

Judy...sad to say that the duck nest was attacked sometime between midnight and this morning. Only two eggs survived with three broken and two missing completely. I've been hoping the mom would return, but has not as yet. Feel bad since I've been fretting about how I was going to get them to water safely.

Cristine

The Captain's Table has music outside on their patio every Sunday night in the summer. Tonight the schedule said it was Salsa dancing with a D.J. What a beautiful night to dance along the river!

Judith Hart

Wendy, Do you have raccoons or weasels? Doesn't that burn you up!

Mavis

Wendy...that is so sad. How long have the eggs been brooded? Terrible. Makes you want to see out there with a bat! I'm like Judy...may have been a coon.
