Bea Griffore

Good morning!

After catching up on all the comments I'm glad to see Rudy on the A-branch. What a beautiful sight! And it's a calm day after all that wind yesterday so maybe our focus will be better today.

I can't believe we didn't get worse weather yesterday after the weather report talked about storms. Guess it all went someplace else. I'm going to have to water today which is ok - things need a little shot of fertilizer anyway. It's suppose to get up to 90 today and humid.

Judith, I need to go back and watch the owl attack link. Thanks in advance for that.

Mavis

Oh, Mr. John...do you really want us to vote on the Osprey site? Really??
Laugh...I was half-way joking!!

Rudy is too spunky for her feathers....she keeps us all in stitches. Thanks for the new thread and update.

Cherrycarol

SO HAPPY TO SEE HER HERE & SUCH A CALM DAY. GOING TO BE HARD TO FIND SHADE, SHE WILL HAVE TO STAY ON BRANCHES FOR THAT. I'LL GO VOTE. MIRACLE IS WHAT I SAY! CAPTAINS TABLE FOR LUNCH TODAY!! HOPE TO SEE MOM OR DAD FLYING AROUND.

Judith Hart

I think I'll go over there and vote, this time ONE time for Miracle.
I've never seen the Osprey still for a moment, some part of the body is always moving. They must burn a lot of calories.

Mavis

Judy...vote twice...once for me..

gregory

that RUDY reeeeaaly thinks she's somethin

Coleen Perilloux Landry

Rudy on the Alcoa branch is a sight to behold. She is now feeding herself fish.
Checked in on the Hellgate Canyon ospreys whose third chick hatched last night. Mama is totally exhausted and Papa is feeding her fish. He is so attentive. People could learn a lot from birds if only they would pay attention.

Cristine

What a joy when I checked in this morning to see Rudy on the Alcoa branch! First time to see it live for me. She never came out from her little perch behind the A branch all last night. (you can't see it on the NV) I checked several times during the night and couldn't see her but I knew she was there.

I watched that the Decorah owl attack video. I was so afraid for those little eaglets. So glad they are O.K. They were smart enough to keep separate, keep their heads down and keep quiet. Makes me nervous that the parents weren't close by to protect them. I am always reassured by the thought that L and J are close by to protect Rudy at night.

Bea, I am going out to water now, too. There's a chance of rain every day this week but I guess but the plants need a little today. Not sure what happened to the storms yesterday! Glad it didn't rain though, for all of those who had Father's Day plans. It was a rough Father's Day for me, first one without my Dad. It's only been 10 weeks since he passed... the same morning as Rudy was born. There will always be that connection for me.

Judith Hart

L or J made a very fast drop off for Rudy, it was almost a fly by and drop. Can't tell what it is yet but it looked large.

Judith Hart

Oh, I see now, it's a young goose.

Catherine

Hi Mavis and CherryCarol - Between traveling and health issues, I have not been able to devote as much time to watching my favorite Eagle nest. I have caught most of the highlights though and am glad to see that Rudy is now branching and mantling.

Judith - thanks for the video of the Decorah nest owl attack. I have never heard the sound that two of the eaglets were making during the attack. It was also interesting to hear the owl during the attack. Hard to believe that the owl would go after such big eaglets.

Catherine in Alexandria VA

Bea Griffore

Don't think I like what's on for lunch. :(

Rudy is just looking all around. It's so quiet after the days of wind we've had. Nice!

That owl attack was something else. And wondered about that sound too - almost like a growl?

Parent just flew in maybe with something and Rudy was mantling and the patent flew back out. She's blocking whatever it was. Oh my, is it another little goose? Rudy is trying to eat now. bbl

Judith Hart

I don't think Rudy knows how to pluck the goose yet, she eats everything. Probably the beak too!

Cherrycarol

We have a severe storm coming. I could see Rudy sitting in the tree today! I hope I can catch her flying.

Cherrycarol

I just took pictures of the baby geese. I'll post them on OT. I don't think they r the ones across the river.Too many people around there. They r every size. Some almost look like the parents.

Cristine

Thunder is rumbling here at the farm. Looks like the worst of it is going to skirt the Q.C. for now, but there is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch out for the entire Q.C. area until midnight.

Bea Griffore

The storm is at my house right now. It's really pouring! I can see lighter sky though so I don't think it will last very long.

It looks calm at the nest. Rudy really did eat everything! I don't see a trace of the little geese.

Bea Griffore

The storm was almost over as fast as it started with only a trace of rain in the guage. Sure made a lot of moise for such a little bit.

Judith Hart

Has anyone read anything as to what age an eaglet learns to defend itself from an attack. I was thinking about the Decorah eaglets with the owl swooping down on them.

Cherrycarol

Judith I don't know. Haven't ever seen that brought up.

Mavis

Good question, Judy...and I have no idea. If you find an answer...I will be curious to know. I wonder if you email Dr. Sharpe, if he will shed some light on that. You go, girl! Great question...now find us the answer!!

Cherrycarol

Dinner brought in. I missed what it was. I hope not another baby goose. They are so cute. Rudy squealing a lot & mom is eating it & gave her a few bites.

Cristine

What in the the world is that? Dark on one side, white on the other, circular and flat. Did anybody see it brought in?

Wendy

It kind of looks like a turtle?

Cristine

It kind of did. That's what I thought of first, Wendy. But then it looks kind of "floppy!"

Judith Hart

It looks like a pie plate on one side and either a turtle or a horseshoe crab on the other.

Cristine

Maybe Rudy is going to bury it in that big hole Liberty dug before she left.

Cristine

Horseshoe crab. Possibly! Do we have those in the Mississippi?

Wendy

I just googled and it may be a flounder.

Cherrycarol

we do have those here. Now they r saying storms coming later tonight. Well we missed the first one. Some of it is still there. I wonder why they eat in front of Rudy like that?

Judith Hart

Flounder? A Flounder doesn't have a shell! I'm laughing....I've caught and filleted a few, haven't hit a shell yet. :) :)

Cristine

It looks to be made of cartilage to me. Maybe that part is not edible?

Cristine

Whatever it is... it is by far one of the most interesting looking things brought into the nest.

Mavis

I heard on the news...gosh awful tornadoes in Nebraska....and looking for tornadoes in IA later...did not hear what part of IA. That nest is in bad shape as it is and jumping Rudy doesn't help much. Sure hope the storm misses the QC.

Not sure what that thing is...looks like an empty turtle shell. Judy...you never caught a flounder that looks like that!! Maybe Mr. John will zoom in on it tomorrow so we can get a clearer look.

Cristine

The radar up to the North and West near Waterloo, Iowa does NOT look good right now! Tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings, all moving to the East. I pray it all stays North of the Q.C. tonight.

Cristine

Those poor Decorah eaglets are right in the path of those horrible storms right now!

Judith Hart
Cristine

Seeing lightning flashes at the Decorah nest and hearing the wind pick up. Two of the babies laying flat in the nest. Hang on babies. It's going to get rough!

Judith Hart

The one Decorah eaglet is frightened, on the edge of nest...wish they would huddle together.
Are those tornado sirens going off?

Cristine

Oh dear... hearing the sirens going off at Decorah nest!

Cristine

Judith... notice how two of them are using that wind to practice their flapping skills :)

Judith Hart

Now the Decorah eaglets are doing that wing flapping Dancin in the rain. Now all three of them.

Cristine

They actually seem to love the wind and the rain!

Judith Hart

The wind has really picked up at our nest!

Cristine

It sure has!! Rudy is just sitting on her new little perch behind the Alcoa branch.

Mavis

9:54 PM EDT

The wind is bad at the nest...Rudy just has to perch on the side of the nest...not on the nest...or in the nest...NO!... below the rim of the nest on that bad side!! I wish I had a fly swatter long enough to reach her! I just took the strongest thing I have...a Zantac! I don't know if WE will survive two more weeks of this until fledging. I'm of the opinion that she needs to learn to fly now. Darn her time...she scares me.

Catherine! I just read your comment! I'm sure glad to hear from you. I was reading some of the comments of 2012 last night and realized how much you contributed and were so kind to everyone. Please comment as often as you can. Sure good to 'see' you back.

Judith Hart

A little information on the Horseshoe crab....It's blood is used in the biomedical field...it's blood is blue because it contains copper...they remove 1/3 of their blood when they bleed them.
Their blood sells for $15,000 a quart.

Cristine

A new Severe Thunderstorm Watch has just been issued for the Q.C, area until 3:00 A.M.! They are expecting that very strong line of storms off to our N.W. to swing on to the South and blow through our area. Well, yikes. That's all I can say.

Cristine

Judith and Mavis... glad you are both on here tonight :)

Mavis

$15,000 a quart?? Judy...do you think we could......yeah...I bet we could. How do you catch horseshoe crabs?

Will someone go to Decorah and tell me where eaglet #3 is? I have watched for 15 mins and cannot see #3. She/he may be in upper right corner but I can't see her.

Cristine...I can't believe the extreme weather you all have in IA...it never seems to stop! Hope y'all will be ok. Nebraska got hit pretty hard.

Mavis

I think I saw something move in lower left corner of Decorah. WHEW!! This is not the time to fledge!

Judith Hart

The Decorah camera is pointing straight down the tree and I don't see #3.

Judith Hart

I think I see her.

Cristine

Yep. I see the feet of #1 and #2 and the feathers of #3 all lined up along the left edge of the nest. Still raining there, isn't it. I just hope the owl doesn't come back tonight.

So when are you two planning your horseshoe crab-catching adventure? :)

Cristine

Rudy laying down in the nest sleeping. No night lights on under the nest tonight.

Mavis

Cristine...I doubt if the horseshoe crab bloodletting project will happen. Judy is terrified of needles...so she would make me draw the blood...and they would probably pinch me in the process...I just don't see it happening.

I was freaking out over #3 on the Decorah nest but I'm pretty sure I saw her too.. in left corner.

Rudy is finally back in the nest and laying down. The weather seems pretty bad right now. It hurts to see then so exposed to the raw weather...but they are made to survive in it...this is their world.

Goodnight everyone...

Cristine

I am seeing lightning now at the Alcoa nest. The storms are on their way.

Jo Ann

Big lightening and thunder at the nest right now. No parents in sight. Lightening is not stopping. Rudy seems scared. Where's Liberty or Justice? I'm getting nervous!! :(

Cristine

I just woke up to a Severe thunderstorm warning for our area SE of the nest. Just checking on Rudy. Looks like I missed watching the storm when it went through the nest. She looks O.K. but very wet. Hearing the robins starting to wake up. Am going to go back to sleep for a couple of hours. Short night. 2000 people without power.

Mavis

6:30 AM EDT

Cristine, I was up and watching with you. Rudy looks like she has been through a night of it. Wind still blowing and everything pretty wet. Rudy is working on that "soft" shell turtle or whatever. Something black fell out and she is picking at that now. She finally gave up with finding any more food tucked away and is now on the Alcoa branch.

Decorah eaglets are all there...and wet! Wind still bad there, too. I am a little surprised that L or J were not there with Rudy during the bad part of the storm.

Hope everyone that is without power, has it restored soon. That looked like a bad system that moved through during the night. Good morning all.

Cherrycarol

Rudy is calling for mom & dad. Time for breakfast. I don't think our storm was too bad. Didn't get much rain. But I guess I slept thru most of it.
Good Morning. Going to be another HOT one today!

Cherrycarol

Up on the Y branch again!

Judith Hart

Mavis, I think that's what the horseshoe crab looking thing was, a soft shell turtle. The turtle with the pointed nose.
I've only seen HS crabs along the coastline.

Judith Hart

Rudy was bouncing up and down on the branch behind the nest TTV, looked like she was on a springboard. She pulled the shell from the side of the nest and is pouncing on it and flying above the nest with it in her talons. I just looked again and the shell is missing.

Bea Griffore

Good morning everyone.

What a night! Durant looks like a war zone but it's mostly tree damage that managed to miss most houses and vehicles. It's just amazing! Rotation was spotted over Durant very early this AM but it didn't touch down, thank God. Things could be much worse here. That twin tornado in Nebraska is much worse with at least 2 deaths so far. So much to be thankful for this morning. I hope the rest of our viewers are ok - there are plenty of us in Iowa.

Good to see Rudy is ok even if the nest has taken a beating. And the sun is shining. Gotta go. bbl

Bobbie

10:59 A.M. CST
Rudy on Y branch. Looking right into the camera! I think she's trying to figure out what she's looking at,as she keeps turning her head back & forth.

Jo

WOO HOO!! I see Rudy on Alcoa's Branch! Good job Rudy! She looks like she's saying "Ok, I'm up here ... now how the heck do I get down again?" Good to see her progress!

Annette Kryske

11:18 AM PDT Rudy is in her little security corner. Every once in a while she says "hello".Another windy day, I have to turn sound the down. Has any parent been around this AM?? That is what I wondered last night, when I saw the Decorah video of a few days ago, of the owls attacking.
Where were the parents to protect the little guys? Fortunately, not too much damage.

Cherrycarol

3 pm She just flew up to the branch on the right at 2 o'clock.
TIME TO MOVE THE CAMERA OUT PLEASE MR JOHN!
I'm glad your ok Bea. I know u got it a lot worse than us. I had customers say our sirens went off here at 4 am. I didn't hear them.

Cristine

I finally saw Rudy jump up onto the Alcoa Branch. she just stayed there a couple of seconds before jumping back into the nest and then immediately jumped on the almost vertical branch.(we need a name for that one.)She is getting very good at maneuvering herself! Now she has jumped over to her secure spot on the other side of the Alcoa branch, squealing the whole time. She is getting so "antsy" to leave, you can just tell.

Coleen Perilloux Landry

Miss Rudy is calling out to anyone who wants to visit her. I gues the wind is keeping her immobile, although I find that she is very well balanced and strong.
The Ospreys in Montana at Hellgate Canyon had a "winter warning" last night and it is currently 44 degrees and light rain. Iris is soaked but keeping her three little ones very dry. They are not a week old yet. She is exhausted and dozes off every chance she gets.

R L ML

Cristine, I saw that too. Just yesterday I said that I had seen her on the Alcoa Branch and had seen her fly back into the nest, but hadn't seen her get to the branch. This afternoon when I tuned in she was just sitting there, then as if on cue to my tuning in she flew up to the Branch. She was squealing and seemed to be telling me that now I had seen it.

Judith Hart

Rudys looking for L or J to make a food drop, they've been flying in at the side she's standing on now. Behind the A branches.

Mavis

Rudy is bored...really bored. She spends her day trying to find a new game to play by herself. I think "playing on the edge and see if I fall" is her favorite game.

After watching the owl intrusion of the Decorah nest, I was amazed that owl did not cause some serious injury to the eaglets. They were taken by surprise and were totally dumb-founded on what was going on. They never tried to defend themselves. I guess they learn that skill after they fledge and learn to hunt. I was totally surprised one of the parents was not close by...or maybe it was out of sight, and chased the owl off. I would have thought the owl would have tried again the next night....unless one of the parents interfered. The saga may not be over yet...but I hope it is. Those are nice looking eaglets and I hope they all survive.

Cherrycarol

Rudy just tried to get up to that right limb again & squealing the whole time. Yes she is ready & getting herself hipped up to go. YOU GO GIRL!! Thanks for pulling out the cam. Carol

Judith Hart

No food today?

Cherrycarol

I was wondering that too; I haven't seen any. More storms after midnight again.

Judith Hart

There she stands, patiently waiting, waiting, no one shows up, all night and all day. Her little silhouette against the frosty evening trees, waiting.
Tomorrow she's going to throw a tantrum!

Mavis

Didn't this happen once last year...no show of parents all day one day? Maybe they are getting her ready to take the big leap! She wants to...but I don't think she is ready yet. If she gets hungry enough...she may try. They may also be trying to thin her down a bit. All she had today was what was in that turtle shell...and it wasn't much!

Cherrycarol

Rudy is having her tantrum & flapping those wings. Very windy again & we got no rain. I hope she get some fish today. Hot & humid 75 already! Ugg! Maybe she'll make to that high branch today.
Good Morning!

Judith Hart

I just woke up....saw her go to the top of the tree, the branch that sticks out TTV, in the wind, on the very top, flapping away.

Judith Hart

She was high above the river....haven't seen the parents yet, are they on vacation? Really angry, throwing her tantrum!

Cherrycarol

LOOK AT ME I MADE IT!! I THINK THEY WERE AROUND THIS MORNING! NO FOOD THO.

Judith Hart

Now on another branch, the one that waves above the nest.

Mavis

7:57 AM EDT

What a show Rudy has given this morning. She squealed so much that she almost gets hoarse at times. Then the flies to the Fly Rod (vertical limb)...back down...then back up and over the the OTL (other tree limb) where she still sits. She is anxious for L or J to bring food. Once...I thought she lost it on the fly rod...it was bouncing so much from the wind and her weight that I thought she was a goner a couple of time. She at least looks stable and content on the OTL.

Bea Griffore

Oh wow! Rudy is something else this morning sitting on that branch almost right in front of the TTV cam!!!

Judith and Carol, isn't that awesome? You saw some great action.

Very windy, warm and humid just like Carol said. Not going to be comfortable weather today. I'm so glad we got done playing "pick up sticks" yesterday. It was amazing how much got cleaned up around town yesterday. I had to go to Davenport yesterday and it looked completely normal like no storm even touched the city. Let's hope for no more storms, at least not damaging ones.

Bea Griffore

Mavis, you were posting the same time I was. And you gave names to the limbs! Now if I can just keep them straight so I know where you are talking about. lol I better study and memorize.

Judith Hart

Amazing, she was on the waving limb, flew up in the air backwards and landed in the nest. I didn't know they could fly in reverse.

Mavis

Judy...they can fly backwards when the wind takes over!! What a cardio workout that was!

Bea...it should be called the 3OL...3 o'clock limb...not OTL (other tree limb) because it is the same tree. I think the waving limb Judy mentioned could be called the BB for bouncing branch. When she jumps on the BB...all she does is bounce! I kept hoping it would not break because it doubled down so far!

I sure wish L or J would do a fish drop so she would calm down!

Cherrycarol

I BETTER WRITE THOSE NAMES DOWN. OR I WILL FOGET. YEA BACKWARDS, SHE DID THAT GOING ONTO THE Y BRANCH THE OTHER DAY TOO.

Bea Griffore

Carol, LOL! And now Mavis is trying to change the neames on us. How will we ever remember?

Mavis

I think if Rudy is not fed by 10 o'clock...we should send out an APB for Rodj to shimmy up the tree and toss a fish to Rudy. Judy...can you have one delivered??

Mavis

Doesn't Amazon do drone deliveries? Just a thought, Judy. You go, girl! Get 'er done!

Mavis

What happened to the hotel guests? I haven't noticed the little birds lately.

Bea Griffore

Maybe the hotel guests moved when that front side started to becomes such a mess?

Judith Hart

The last time I saw a parent in the nest was Monday about 8PM when that turtle looking thing was delivered. She must be getting a bit dry by now with all that screeching...we're now at 37 hours with no food or parent around.

Judith Hart

Is Rudy 11 weeks old today?

Judith Hart

Parent just flew in...not sure, looks like a young goose delivered.

Bea Griffore

I think it was young goose and it went over the side!

Now parent back with something and Rudy mantled whatever that I can't see.
