In today's issue of Farnborough Airshow News, Alcoa Group President Bill Christopher is featured discussing how aluminum still reigns as the material of choice in the aerospace market despite a trend toward composites. And even composites like the Boeing 787 use thousands of highly specialized metallic fasteners made by Alcoa.
Christopher says the next "battle ground" will involve the single aisle planes, where he believes Alcoa's metallic products will prove superior to composites. Alcoa has developed three generations of aluminum lithium alloys since the launch of the Boeing 787 that are stronger than traditional alloys, allowing manufacturers to make thinner and lighter fuselage skins.
