Patagonia Awards Carbondale, CO with Recycling Grant

Outdoor clothing company, Patagonia (Ventura, California), has awarded the Town of Carbondale, Colorado with a $20,000 grant to purchase 15 new recycling stations for the Roaring Fork River community.

The recycling stations, also known as clusters, will consist of three containers- one for commingled containers, one for newspaper and one for debris- and will be positioned throughout the community in town parks and other public spaces, such as bus stops and trailheads.

EPA Region 4 Releases New Recycling Toolkit

EPA Region 4 [Southeast] has released a new Municipal Government Toolkit (MGTK). The MGTK provides a centralized web-based resource for recycling-related information designed specifically to assist local government leaders and recycling program coordinators.  The MGTK provides a key resource to help elected officials and decision-makers identify information to develop, evaluate, support, and/or expand their reduction programs. 

This resource presents a collection of economic data, sample legislation, waste reduction efforts, guidance resources, and case studies regarding the impacts of recycling in the Southeast.  The website focuses on six key areas related to recycling in the Southeast: economic impacts, cimate change aspects, community benefits of recycling, and recycling hot topics, as well as modules on starting a recycling program, and improving a recycling program.

America Recycles Day on November 15

On November 15 of every year America Recycles Day (ARD) is celebrated all across the nation in order to heighten people’s awareness of recycling in homes and offices and as well as to prompt people to purchase products made with recycled content. Marking its tenth year anniversary, ARD provides a perfect opportunity for people to re-evaluate their recycling commitment and determine how their recycling efforts can be increased. ARD allows many community groups, government branches, non-profits, and other organizations to spread the word about local recycling opportunities and also educate the public of the social, environmental, and economic benefits of recycling. Stocks down, but recycling on the RISE

As part of a package of "sweeteners" designed to make the U.S. government’s $700 billion financial bailout package more appealing to members of Congress, the Recycling Investment Saves Energy (RISE) legislation has been signed into law. In addition to several other renewable energy, environmental and tax measures, the RISE legislation was incorporated into the Senate version of the bill following the surprise rejection of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s bailout proposal in the House of  Representatives. The House subsequently voted in favor of the amended Senate bill on October 3^rd.
      
RISE provides a 50-percent accelerated depreciation allowance toward the purchase of equipment and machinery used by the recycling industry. Totaling $162 million in tax incentives over 10 years, RISE is intended to encourage the construction of new recycling facilities and the modernization of existing domestic infrastructure.
      
The legislation is a major victory for the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. (Washington), which had lobbied for the passage of RISE since 2005.
