While most Americans make an effort to recycle aluminum cans, the same can’t be said for aluminum can food cans. It is estimated that less than 20 percent of aluminum pet food cans are recycled each year.
Purina wants to change that.
The maker of Friskies and Fancy Feast is on a mission to educate cat owners about the recyclability of cat food cans. It has launched a new campaign, “Together We Can,” to increase the total number of pet food cans recycled each year.
“Aluminum cat food cans, just like aluminum soda cans can be recycled. We're so pleased that Purina and its brands are helping to make a positive difference in the amount of cat food cans that are either reused or recycled,” said John Byrne of Keep America Beautiful.
As part of the “Together We Can” campaign, Purina is bringing together artists to create original pieces of art from cat food cans, recycling them for a new use. A gallery in New York City will display up to 100 pieces of the “cat can” artwork.

Ms. Sleuth,
I did not think about pet food. But the big picture is basically;
1. Aluminum has to break the single serve portion market and upsize.
2. Aluminum has to replace multilayer packaging, where ever possible.
3. Alcoa has to empower the above because, "Aluminum knows the way".
Alcoa can't wait!

I own three cats, and in a good week generate up to 30 catfood cans. At the dump today I was told that they do not belong in the metal pile, or the steel can pile, or the aluminum pile. The suggestion was, throw em in the trash. And a big shrug to go with it. The only alternative is dry food, which is in paper.
This disappoints me no end...
I think the problem comes from the fact that all the cat owners in the area read the side of the boxes, and found out oh boy, I can recycle these--and the landfill people were inundated with cat food cans--there's even a big red sign that says NO CAT FOOD CANS. sigh.
